Exclamation A few questions

Hi everyone!

I just bought a new 2001 jeep wrangler and one thing I noticed is that when I was test driving them a lot of them did not have the 4wd light come on. The 4wd seems to be working just no light. Is this common?

And

When i took my jeep to a mechanic he said he thought there may be a bearing bad In the transmission has anyone heard about this happening frequently as well?? Thank you !

Welcome to the Forum! I wish I could help you out, but I'm not a mechanic. How does it drive? Do you trust your mechanic? There are bearings that can go south, not only in the tranny, but all over your Jeep. I say ride it out if it goes down the road well, or get a second opinion. Also, my 04' doesn't have a "4 wheel drive" indicator light, but trust me.... You'll know when it's in!! good luck with your TJ!

It is very common for the 4wd sensor to go bad. Mine hasn't worked in the past 8 years or so and 4wd works just fine.

As for the bearing, I'm going to guess you have a manual transmission. If so, your mechanic may not be familiar with the sound of an NV3500 transmission. They rattle a lot when the clutch is pressed. Mine has made the same sound since day 1 when I bought it new.

I didn't think anything was wrong. The transmission works fine it just makes a lot of noise so thanks for the reassurance.

To be sure. The nv3500 trans can make a lot of noise that is not a problem. But they can also make a lot of noise that IS I a problem. I would definitely have the trans fluid replaced on a jeep I just bought. Use royal purple synchromax. Mine was much quieter and shifted better after the change. And mine was just a normal interval change.

And to be sure, the part time 4x4 light fails on many TJ's. make sure you know when you can and can't use PT 4x4 in your jeep.

Welcome to the forum!

The indicator light for the 4wd on my 2000 quit working years ago. It is a common porblem. Also, I would probably change the front and rear diff fluid as well.
