A fun losing TJ project!

Thought you Jeepers might enjoy a few pics of my 97 TJ summer project, which now that completed is sitting in the garage unused. I have a friend who is a semi retired 30 yr pro body/paint man and mechanic with his own shop who needed some work so I said lets do a Jeep!.. as he has done about 38 custom jeep builds in the last 5 years. He gave me a great deal at 30$/hr for technical shop time plus $15/hr for regular labor.
So we started on a high miles stock non-abused TJ with as close to a tub off rebuild as you can get without actually taking the tub off.
-rebuild 4 cyl and clutch
-new offroad air intake system
-new large alternator
-new cooling system
-new all alum oversize radiator
-HD alum screen protector for radiator
-dual battery mount
-2 new optimas
-marine battery isolated charging system
-new wheel bearings
-replaced front fenders
-coil springs off 2010 rubicon
-new front disk brake assembly n rotor
-R/R rear drums with disk brakes
-new fender flares
-new exhaust system with super quiet muffler
-new shocks
-2 in. lift
-1/2 in. body lift
-re-gear diff's to 4:88
-install tru trac posi front and rear
-new bumpers front and rear
-rear body armor
-rock sliders
-new winch
-smoked turn signal lenses
-complete scotchbrite interior of tub and rhino lined
-heavy duty rear brake/turn light with screen
-refinish paint the dash and side panels
-pro re-upholster of front seats with factory grade fabric (no rear seat)
-locking security tuffy console and glove box
-new bikini top and roll bar pads

- a 'no cuttin the corners' pro paint job ( windshield out) green pearl - inc roll bar and factory hard top.
- new 12.50 x 33 BFG AT plus spare mounted on all black pro comps
- also have 50% worn 12.50 x 33 MTR's with new spare
- and 2 factory steel 1/2 doors all repainted refinished to match for summer use with bikini top

and probably a few other things I have forgotten. Personally I prefer the 4 cyl as it dosent seem to be as lurchy in 4x4 and as all know the 4 cyl goes anywhere a 6 will but on less fuel. Also the 4 cyl dosent have the torque to tear stuff up as much..I put in the 4:88 gears to bring the gearing back to stock with the 33 tall tires. It runs beautiful but I only drove it about 100 miles after the project was done for road test. Ny wife dosent like to drive it or be a passenger as not as comfortable as my 2012 f150 4x4! so be it. I guess I will sell it and buy a river boat for next summer. How to lose your ass? invest 22k+ and sell for prob 15-16k! oh well.http://www.wranglerforum.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Too bad there is no wheeling to be done there..... At least on the coast side, other than logging roads there was no wheeling I could find.....

there is alot of real wheelin trails around here but need to get hooked up with the locals...remember where there are logging roads there are skid trails! and then there are miles and miles of remote hi tension power line roads on blm...

nothing wrong with the 4 cyl for 4x4 action...if i wanted more torque/power then would put in a v8 or diesel and swap the axles/tranny but i like reliability
thus the 4 banger. not talking about the engine but what lower hp doesent do to the power train. the dana 44 has the same axle as the 35. just beefier gears but the axle still goes snap.
for extreme 4x4 get your rocks off on driving a cat 518 log skidder...i got 1000 hours on them in rough ground. my little jeep feel great just crawling thru the crud not breaking and busting stuff up.

Nice work on the restore; however, I wouldn't expect more than 7k. 06 LJ Rubicons sell for 16k.

Well after 15 months in Brookings I never did find anything worth wheeling on. Just dirt tracks and locked gates.....

As we all know though, there's an a** built for every seat!! Just a matter of finding that right a**!

Personally though,
The 4 cylinder would be a TOTAL turn off for me.
