A little Jeep buying advise please.

Hi there,

My name is Seth and I've decided to buy a Wrangler. Growing up, my dad had a 1977 J20 that COULDN'T get stuck in the Montana wilderness, and I've been a Jeep fan ever since. I want to spend between 10k-20k and would greatly appreciate your advice. I guess I'll start describing what I have in mind.

-I want to buy a 2 door Wrangler, preferably with a small lift on it. I would prefer a soft top but I live in Seattle where it rains constantly, and I also will be using it for Skiing, once a week when winter arrives. Do the soft tops hold up well to cold, snow, and rain?

-I also want one with the built in speakers on the roll bar, is this something that can easily be added on later if I get one with out?

- what kind of maintenance needs to be done on a wrangler around the 70-100K mile mark?

-I like to longer jeeps and noticed that the 2005 Wrangler looks to be physically longer, from bumper to bumper than the previous models, is this true, and is it true for all the models after 2005?

-I like the Tuffy boxes, are they easy to install yourself?

-I won't do a lot of muddin' necessarily, I want it to be good in the snow.

That's all I can think of now. What should I look for when buying a used Jeep? as far as making sure it wasn't ridden hard and put away wet. Any advice is welcome, I'm little green when it comes to wranglers.

Anytime ou buy a used vehicle with that kind of mileage change all the fluids so you know where you are. I would personally go for the I6. I have 140K on mine and it will handle larger tires better. If you want a longer jeep, they do sell longer versions of the TJ (Refered to as LJ), but they are hard to find. Look for frame rust and frame decay especially around the skid plate. If you are concerned it was abused look for lots of dirt on the frame or scrapes from rocks. Jeeps are tough and off roading shouldn't be of concern. Make sure if the lift is a body lift that is is not more then 1.25 inches. Other than that, check the fluids and make sure they look good. This is especially important for a private sale, because it tells you how the owner takes care of it. Ask for records if possible. Drive it on the highway and make sure you hit some bumps at over 45 mps to check for Death wobble. Check the 4 wheel drive to make sure it works.
