The more backspacing a wheel has, the narrower the Jeep's wheelbase will be. So if you want to increase the track width, go with a wheel that has a reduced amount of backspacing, not more backspacing.

The OE wheels have 5 to 5.5" of backspacing so to make the track wider, you'd go to perhaps 3.75" of backspacing. Some make wheels with only 3.25" of backspacing but I had a set of those on my TJ 13-14 years ago and they made it look like a skateboard.

The yellow tape measure below is measuring the wheel's amount of backspacing...

I've got a set of Pacer wheels set at 3.25" and I don't think it looks too wide at all. The width helps to help roll off of trees. Tire > slider > tire > clear! Keep in mind that if you go with anything but a 8" wide wheel those numbers won't mean a thing. You'll still need less backspace to go wider, but it'd be something other than a 3.75" that you would be looking for!

The amount of back spacing a wheel has doesn't affect the wheelbase of a vehicle.

That is true, I meant to say track width.
