Hello -
I recently had Air Conditioning installed in my Jeep last week. The kit is from Jeepair.com for reference. My compressor cycles on and off every 5 seconds or so, repetitively. I did search it, and some have the same issue and say its fine, others say its a sign of low freon. The kit has been in my jeep for only 4 days. The compressor only comes on with the switch is on the 3 "a/c" settings and the 2 "defrost" settings.
The A/C blows ice cold, but my question is, will it cycling on and off wear the compressor down?
Thanks.

I beleive there should be a low refridgerant sensor in line some where that u can unplug and if your compressor runs constant after being unplugged its got a low charge..the sensor should be under the hood close to the compressor..
^This is true, but it could also be a high pressure switch, especially if the a/c system seems to be working. A clog (air, debris) in the system will also cause high pressure causing the compressor clutch to do this. It would be alot easier to determine the issue if you could monitor the pressures on the high/low sides. Got any buddies with a/c gauges?
My stock AC compressor was doing that as well. Thought it was low on freon, so I injected the dyed refrigerant into the line, ensuring I did not overcharge the system (gauges needed). The compressor stopped cycling as much, then started to cycle again when I felt the AC not get as cold. Even though I cannot see the fluorescent dye leaking anywhere, I know there must be a leak, possibly inside the condenser. So, I do not think the compressor should cycle constantly every 5 seconds....
Interesting stuff. I hope there is no leak as it is brand new, but I guess you never know. Also - most have said they just left it alone and never had issues and the A/C always blew cold.
What is the temperature outside? If it is not really warm the a/c will not continue to compress as it will freeze. Usually the compressor will remain engaged when the fan speed is max or just under. If you have it on low speed it is very common for the compressor to cycle on and off, even when warm outside. It is true that it will do this if low on freon but it will do it when the temperature is hot and with the fan on high, then you have a low freon condition.
It was upper 60s today, but a bit humid. I had it one the first fan setting, just to keep cool air coming circulating. That does make sense that it would keep cycling on and off.
It's normal. There are two types of systems: the kind where the compressor stays engaged constantly when the A/C or defrost mode is selected and the kind that cycle on and off when the A/C or defrost mode is selected.
Rubicon2 is exactly right. Jeeps control outlet temp by cycling the compressor and as far as I know all aftermarket units do the same. However, you still could have the incorrect amount of freon. The manufacturer of the A/C should include in the instructions the proper amount of freon.
my 06 a/c compressor cycles on/off every few seconds and it stays ice cold whereas my 03 nissan a/c compressor stays engaged and would not cycle on/off.
I have a 2011 Jeep Liberty Jet that wasn't blowing much cold air. First you have to change the cabin air filters. they are behind the glove box. There is two inside a little door that are kind of troublesome to pull out. As far as A/C Pro goes. I followed the directions and ended up putting too much in. The compressor will turn on and off at high setting. I took a small straight slot screw driver and depressed the pin on the valve when the compressor was running and dropped the PSI guage to exactly 35 psi. The temperature control knob on the AC Pro is only good if your going to add freon out of the can. It's not accurate when the compressor is running and the return line is ice cold it will give you a false indication of how charged it is. It works well now.
I should let you know you should wear medical gloves when bleeding the valve, It sprays all over the place, hand, wrist and arm. Hold your breath, I'm sure it's not good to breath either.
My 99 cycles on and off every few seconds and works great and has for years.
