Question After Market Rear View Mirror

This is a very trivial type of thing. I purchased an aftermakerket rear view mirror at Autozone a while back to replace the oem one, for both looks and because the aftermarket is longer and it give be a better view of everything. (well, it should anyways)

The thing was only $20 and you can tell it was made rather cheaply, because what I thought to be chrome, really turned out to be plastic, but I still like it. The problem that I'm having is that it seems to be too light. What I mean by that is that even the rumble of the engine alone gets this thing vibrating so hard you can't even see out of it. Let alone any bumps on the road.

I haven't been able to figure out how to stabilize it at all. The actual part that you adjust is very tight and stable. It's not like it's moving and I have to keep adusting it back into position. It's the mirror frame itself that is vibrating. My initial thought was to somehow make it a bit heavier, but don't really know how to do that withought wrecking the looks of it. Plus, I wouldn't want to weigh it down so much to where i'd end up breaking the tab off from my windsheild. Also, if I weigh it down too much then the mirror WILL fall out of position and it WILL make me have to keep adjusting it.

So I was wondering if some of you inventive guys out there could give me some ideas on what would work?

It isn't too lite it is the mounting post.It is too loose at the pivot points of the post.I got an aftermarket on mine and it isn't lite at all it is made from polished stainless steel and weighs more than the factory but I ended up having to change the mounting post from the factory to the new one because of the vibration.Just the windshield tab will not cut it I am talking about the whole neck that the mirror is mounted to.Look on the back of yours and see if it has two small screws on either side of the ball joint type thing on the mounting post.If so loosen up those and pull the ball out of the socket then use one from a factory one.

I bought a stock replacement mirror that does the same thing, it is a little heavier probably so it doesn't vibrate too bad at idle but once I am moving everything is blurred.

Gee, just hit a junk yard and find a a mirror, look for a 90 something Olds cutlass and it will probably have two map lights built into it, $5 maybe.

That's sounds like a good idea, I'll check and see if I can swap them out.
Thanks!

Ducktape solves everything. Doesn't it?

lol you people and your mirrors, i havent looked in my mirrors for months. The passenger one.. i cant see it because i have relocation brackets, the center one is useless as it either has to be pointing straight down or way too far up so you have tons of blind spots on it, the drivers one.. also useless because you dont have any blind spots when looking out the drivers side The jeep mirrors are just for show

Anyhow I'd look for a strong heavy duty base.

If you want to make it heavy, if you can open it, you can fill it up with glue mixed with metal shavings.

Ehhhh!

Switching the base, mounting, and pivot points out won't work. They are 2 completely different set ups. It might be possible, but I'd have to brake my OEM mirror to do it.

If you have any other suggestions I'd be happy to hear them. I have to go out of town for a few days, so for right now, I' put the OEM mirror back on. Functionality is better than cosmetic for this city Trip.

Hopefully I'll have some suggestions here wehn I return.

Talk with you in a few days.

Haha. Not sure sure if you're joking or serious.

If you're serious, no can do. The OEM mirror is a lot shorter than the skull mirror. That's actually the main reaosn I went looking for a new mirror in the first place. The stock mirror is TINY and you don't have a very wide range of view with it. Now that I got the after market mirror, I really dig it and I don't want to get rid of it. It's just a real pain in butt trying to figure out how to keep the vibration out of it.

I put the the OEM mirror on tonight for the trip tomorrow. Man, it bumbs me out look'n at that thing. Oh well, at least I'll be able to see out of it. I'll just have to be moving my head all over to see what's behind me cause it's so small.
