Aftermarket half door weatherstrip

I'm currently removing the weatherstrip from my half doors so they can be painted. The weatherstrip channel is taped on and it going to be a big PITA to take the tape off the channel. I've seen aftermarket replacements that don't use the channel but they appear to use several christmas trees that are not drilled for on the stock door. Anybody have aftermarket weatherstripping and how do you like it? How did you install?

you should be able to use the same sealing tape that the hard top and truck toppers use. all it is is 1" sticky backed soft foam.

I left the channel on the half doors I had painted...then pulled the christmas trees out of the aftermarket weatherstrip. They popped right in the channel.
