Air intake horn

What is the proper direction for the short "horn" on the intake of the air filter box? Mine has no keyed direction so I can rotate it from straight down to straight up and most inbetween. Seems if I point it up It's asking to gulp water. If down and I forge a stream same thing. Anyway factory new it must have been set someway consistantly.

i have had water well over the hood, half way up the windshield to be exact and i didn't get any water in the box.

i will as soon as i turn 18 its kind of a hassle to when you are 17 haha but i did have to replace my tps cause it got soaked. not sure how i didn't get water in the box but my tps got soaked

Ok, but what about the front axle, rear axle, transfer case, and transmission? All of those are vented at levels no higher than the top of the radiator grill. In fact, your AX-5 (and 30RH if you have the automatic) has its vent right on the transmission itself. All of those components have vents on them that can easily let water in.

i never did check those but i was never stopped in the water, so i assumed they would be ok.

While I wasn't planning on motorboating my jeep I could see where sizable amount of water could splash up in the area. A few weeks ago driving home in the morning after work we had flash flooding. I didn't see some water in the road and hit hard. At the time I thought I'd driven off a deep peer.

the internal temps of your diffs,tranny and transfer case create a vacuum when cold water touches it as the temps drop. if you were "in water half way up the windshield" you have water in your diffs,tranny,transfer case and im not sure how you could have possibly not have got water in your intake.

well it seems to be fine i will probably change the fluids but i did it while i was on vacation in maine and then drove it 600 miles back home with no problems and its my dd

i could be wrong but i believe that trail rated wranglers are sealed as to avoid this very problem... is this correct?

They're sealed...up to about the radiator line. The diffs and transmission HAVE to breathe, other wise they'd be popping seals and such due to expansion. So yeah you're pretty much alright till the water gets to your head lights, but even then I wouldn't go that deep.

My tranny had an air breather vent maybe an inch high mounted near the shifter and when I was rebuilding my Jeep I added a much longer breather hose that extends up into the engine area and you should do this as well, if you decide to drive it in deep water or any water at all. They are not submarines. Water and gear oil don't mix well.
I did this with my NSG370 6 speed and I also did it with my AX5 years ago.
THEY ARE NOT SEALED and will suck water into them with ease! Check your axle hoses as well.

No, none are sealed, all must have vents or their housings will crack from air pressure that builds up inside when they get hot. All are vented on their housing and some of those vents have hoses that lead up so their opening is above reasonable water levels. However, the 30RH and 32RH automatic transmissions and the AX-5 and AX-15 transmissions have no remote vent hoses, their vents are right on the transmissions and they can suck water inside. Axles, the transfer case, and the newer transmissions have hoses leading to their vents which help keep water out but only if the hoses are connected and in good condition.
