All D44's are not the same ???

Is the D44 in the back of my '04 Unlimited the same as the one in the '04Rubicon?

A guy from my jeep club bought an air locker that came out of the D44 in the back of an '04 Rubicon to put into the D44 in the back of his '99 Sport. He found out that it would not fit into his D44 without a lot of machine work. He told me that the D44 in my '04 Unlimited was the same as the one in the Rubicon, but mine came with the LS diff instead of the air locker. Anyone know if this is a true statement?

He's offered to sell it to me for a great price, but I don't want to do it if it won't bolt in without a lot of extra work.

Dimensionally inside, they are slightly different so the D44 used in the Rubicon is indeed slightly different than the standard TJ D44 in your Unlimited. Externally they are interchangeable but something is different inside that I'm not really sure exactly what it is. Go with an ARB Air Locker if you want your D44 to have an air locker.

If I wasn't getting the Rubi locker and the axle at the same time I wouldn't mess with all of the other little things you have to do to make it work. Thick gears, a litting grinding on the inside of the housing etc.....

A Rubicon D44 is different then any TJ or other D44

It might have a D44 housing but its designed different just like the axles are different and will not fit your axle unless you have a D44 out of a Rubicon

how ever your 04 TJ D44 parts will swap with a 99 TJ D44 (they are the same

If your Jeep doesn't have abs, you'll need the computer for it, if not don't worry about the hook-ups.

That is the issue, my Jeep has ABS and the axles I am getting do not. I will start a new tread and see what folks come up with.
