Am I being asked to overpay for a regear?

So, I have done most of the labor myself on my Jeep. Went into ORW in San Diego just now. Does it sound reasonable to take 36 hours to re gear and charge $110.00 an hour?

Noooo way.

You're talking $3,960 + tax in labor, then around $900 in parts = $4,860+ tax. I live in Denver and a gear chane here is right around $1,800 at the reputable places and that's using Yukon Gears.

36 hours is a little excessive the $110 is a going rate at most shops for labor though

Original title of this thread and a subsequent post were not appropriate. They have been editted accordingly. No more "jokes" on that topic please. Ever. Carry on.

Look for a place that has a fixed rate to do the job. Should be roughly $1200 to do both axles (parts and labor).

Knowing ORW & the ownership, I don't believe you got a quote for what you claimed to just regear two axles. My last regearing at ORW at their Escondido location cost me just under $1100 for everything... all parts, all labor, including tax, for both axles.

I didn't say that was the first price they quoted which was something like just under $1300, but that was the price I got after negotiating for a better price/discount.

I don't know of any shops that install R&P gears that don't quote a suggested retail non-discounted price first. You have to ask for a discount, they won't push a discount on you. Kind of like buying a car. Don't pay the first price they offer to sell it to you for.

He said just in labor cost, not including parts is 110 and will take 36 hours. Should not take that long in my mind. In my kind that is way too long for a job. Thanks for the input guys.

Thats $3960. No way on that price!!!! I just had both axle's upgraded to super 35 rear and super 30 front for that price. That's new gears lockers front and rear all new bearings and axles, and an air compressor. Run my friend run away fast.

Exactly who did you receive that quote from at ORW? There's something fishy about this whole thing. Or are could you be misreading a 3.6 hour quote to be a 36 hour quote?

Is Stan is SD? Well what the guy actually said was a day and a half of labor. So its probably more around 20 hrs now that I think about it. So 2000 for labor not.including parts.

Day and a half would be 12 hours. Thats $1320 in labor. Not too bad but still not as good as most..

ive never seen an auto shop that only worked 8 hour days. when I did it, it was 8 am-7pm. m-f. one hour lunch, no other breaks during the day (by choice) every shop ive ever been to pulled 9 hour working days minimum. so I'd say your 12 should be more like 13.5 minimum, probably more like 15. I'd shop around more, even if you "negotiate" as Jerry says, some shops will just say no. an HONEST shop will quote you the closest price they can based on the flat rate manual they have, and generally will give you the best price first if they want your business. my boss used to get so passed at people who would try to negotiate, or say "well Joe shmo can do it for xx less can you match that?" he'd just tell them no, this is our price, if you can get a better deal elsewhere, by all means.
he was in business 45 years before retiring, but that shop is still in business, (8 years later) running exactly the same way. forget the big chain shop. find a small local guy.
