First we went over Imogene Pass from Telluride, then saw a cool mine so we drove over there. Then we say a trail up from there crossing some rock tailings. Looked solid........ha! half way thru, we slid sideways a bit then a bit more then a lot. Finally got it stopped. In the debris, no anchors visible then behind us about 120 feet a rock stuck up. It was solid and with our winch cable fully extended under the jeep thru a D ring in the back we created a pivot point which finally allowed us to let the jeep slide pivoting so the front pointed down at which point I could drive out. Second. Poughkeepsie gulch trail. Just a nice ride from Silverton thu Animas Forks and on to the Alpine Loop. Then I saw the sign and just had to check it out. Got up the boulders ok using the winch and predriven winch points. We bumped along until we got to a point where we could go around the hill or over the eroded rocks. Of course I picked the rocks. Try one, wet tires poor choice of track and we slid back.
Try two, got almost up then slid back this time we're balanced on a rock with a single tire on the ground. Winch time, luckily my son was out of the jeep (he's the smart one) my wife, dog and I are trapped in a jeep at a greater than 45 degree angle with a slight breeze making us teeter. My son got the winch line out, the tow strap and that beautiful orange tree hugger and found a rock to hook up to. We got winched to a leve position on the rocks then picked a path to protect the oil pan and were able to winch out of trouble.
The rest of the trip up thru Hurricane Pass was without incident.
Sorry no pics of the second portion, we're too busy getting out!
Sure was fun, my wife said once was enough.
