Angry birds!

I have heardof this problem before with the front driveshaft joint. This weekend, I went through some pretty deep water and after the crossing, I had angry birds for about 10 min then it was gone...whats up with this? Im 95% sure that's what it was because it only happened while I was driving and sounded like...well, angry birds lol has that happened to anyone else after going through water?

Darn I thought this was a thread about the game Angry Birds.

License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote.

From what i understand, its when the joint on the front driveshaft starts to go bad. You can tell that it's going bad because the sound that it makes sounds like you pissed off like 100 birds.

The joint I'm referring to is the one under the black grommet on the front driveshaft.

In short, its when the centering ball in the CV joint of the front DS starts going bad. If you have a greasable joint (which TJs don't from the factory IIRC) you can try greasing it and see if its still good. If you have a non-greasable joint like I did, then its time for a rebuild. Not that bad of a job; with a u-joint press from harbor freight or a loaner from an auto parts store, you can change out the u-joints and centering ball kit in less than an hour (its not necessary to change the u-joints unless they are bad as well; I did just because I was already there). I've been doing my own and its not bad. You can check out Stu Olsen's site for a great writeup with pictures and part numbers. You can also have a drive shaft shop do it for you for possibly around $100, I think thats what Jerry B. usually gets done.

If your squeaking went away, you probably just had something stuck in there from the dirt/mud, etc.. and it worked its way out, but that may mean you are getting close to needing a new centering ball kit. When mine was squeaking, the squeaking would come back each time I drove my Jeep. It would squeak until I had driven above 30MPH or so for a few minutes, and then it would go away until the next time I left my Jeep sit for an hour or more. I finally got around to replacing it 2 months later and all was good. I always make sure to rinse that joint out after I've been in mud; mud is like sandpaper for those joints.
