Annoying Little Problem

I have an '03 automatic, purchased used. Every time that I put it in park, turn the key off, I have to give the shifter another nudge up against the "stop" into park before it will release the key. A little thing but I figure there is an adjustment somewhere (I am not even sure what needs adjusting) that will correct this. I figure it is some switch somewhere that is not engaging fully.

Thanks.

Nope, already done that...

2.5" RC lift, Skid Row skid, JKS discos, and so on. My "to-do" list is getting shorter and this is on it. Nothing I cannot live with but would like to rectify it. When I give it that 2nd "tap" into park, you can hear it (a solenoid?) release.

And your turd looks like????

Where do you get off thinking you can come on here and disrespect other Jeepers? If you can add "positive" value...then you are welcome to participate.

Otherwise, take your bag of tricks somewhere else.

Put the e-brake on and chock the tires. Go under the Jeep and locate the linkage. There should be a switch mounted near the linkage you can adjust.

Flattie seems to be having a minor issue with proper communication. But I'm sure he will tone it down.

I will check the switch when I get home, but it sure does not feel like it catches on anything. Just have to give it an extra nudge ( a tap really) to the full stop, then you hear the solenoid release.

This appears to be the problem. The long metal stud is the little device which will or will not let you shift between gears. The nylon shaft below it is the ignition interlock. When I put in park, the metal stud does not always slide fully up allowing the nylon one the go fully up and release. I tried tapering the slot a little but to no avail. I am still working on it. Ideas welcome.

As a side note, while in there, I noticed this sticker on the shifter plate. It seems to be for a "TJ" (duh!) and says "1st shift" with a date of 6/16/06. My TJ is an '03. Is this some kind of mod or performance product, or was it just replaced at some point?

Thanks!

Also dbbd1, i dont know if you know that (i'm assuming you dont since you took a picture of it) however your year of jeep is considered the TJ model..

Also when you press the button does the metal small piece go down? I have a manual so i cant check. Sorry.

Yes, I knew it is a TJ. The sticker makes it look like a part from s shelf, that someone would pull off and say "oh, yeah, this is the right one." The shift release button on the side of the handle does indeed make it go down, it just does not want to always go fully up and dis-engage the ignition lock

i see, well my bad on the tj part, just wanted to make sure

maybe there is a spring in there? if you pull it up manually does it move up? What does that spring in the back connect to? perhaps its stretched out so it doesnt have the power to pull it up?

Uh, may be leave well enough alone....? Boy, us jeep'rs we cant leave anting alone. hehehe! Actually, take the unit out and replace it with a new one. That hopefully will correct the issue.

No harm, no foul. You never know, you have to ask.

I would hard-pressed to tell you what that spring actually does. It goes from the different nylon part at the base of the shift handle to a metal bracket that the shift cable (that goes down to the tranny) attaches to, but they both move together. Maybe some sort of "overload" spring for the cable, should it get too much tension on it??? Does anyone know how you remove the "T" handle on the autos, maybe it needs some lube down there?
