Another cracked windshield ....

Wondering if anybody had issues with their windshield like I just did,

Last Dec I noticed a 3 inch crack on my windshield after I got back to the jeep, I had been using the heater set to “defrost” and thought it might have been caused by the change in temp. It started at the bottom edge exactly in the center and started growing. I noticed it would grow every time I used the heater in defrost mode and let it sit for a while.

I contacted a local glass replacement/repair shop and on Jan 2nd they replaced the windshield. I was told then that the windshield being replaced was not the original one. I was charged $195 for the glass and 25.00 for the new molding.

Yesterday when I got in the car to come home from work I see that the windshield is cracked again in the same area (middle of windshield) this time running from top to bottom. I called the guy who replaced it two weeks ago and told him what happened; he said he needed to see it to determine what caused the crack. It doesn’t look like the crack was caused by a rock or anything hitting the windshield.

Could it be a problem with the frame? I’m wondering why the guy didn’t pick it up the first time. I hate to pay another $230 for a new windshield!!

As long as the crack won't obstruct your view leave it. Old Murphy won't crack the windshield twice

I guess using Duct Tape is out of the question...

If I leave it alone, won't I get a ticket for driving around with a cracked windshield?

Thanks!

Is not unusual for a hot defroster to crack a windshield. Its not just a Jeep thing. I've seen it happen on several makes and models. Always turn the heater off defrost when its not needed anymore.

Had the defrost crack my original windshield a few years ago (there was a TINY pinhole at the bottom of the glass, but it was a very cold morning and I had the defrost going strong, so I don't think I hit anything). I try to be more careful now.

Sounds dangerous, especially with a crack that large.

Maybe the windshield frame is twisted? Would that make it crack?

JRIEDY85, I think you are right!!

This afternoon I took it to the shop that replaced it two weeks ago and the guy could not determine what caused the "stress crack" all looked good. Then while we started looking at it from the side we noticed that the bottom part of the frame is "bowed" out.

So he told me to confirm that it's supposed to be like that and to call his shop on Monday. I was going to stop by a Jeep dealership and look for a TJ and/or LJ of the same year to compare them.

I don't think it's supposed to be like that, so how do I fix this ??

Thanks!
