another heater question

hi,
got a 98 w/air and the heater works fine. My question is on the vents. The 2 larger ones on each side of the dash-below the window defrost ones don't appear to do anything. Anyone know what setting they should be blowing air out of? Got a feeling the PO may have screwed up the duct work when he changed out the radio and added wireing for XM sat radio. I've noticed that the defrost grateing sits funny and the screw holes holding on the center consule cover are broke(i zip tied it so it's not even noticable-but it was very loose before) The heater/air, temp, defrost/heat, and fan speed switches all work fine-just nothing out of those vents.
thanks
