another noob with tire questions... Help?

So I just recently acquired a 1999 Wrangler Sport 4.0 Manual. I have what I believe to be stock 15" wheels with some sort of tire on it.

What is the largest I can put on without a lift?

If I do eventually go with a 4" lift how big can I go with the D35 and not have to worry about it? I read lots of bad stuff about the D35 but every jeep i looked at in the area for sale had a D35 in it...?

thanks for the help (sorry for the typos if any)

31x10.5x15 plus a couple of washers on the wheel stops depending on which wheels you have.

The D35 can be broken with stock tires or wheeled for years with 35s. Your driving style determins that the most. I broke my D35 open with 33s and a 4cyl. My buddy is running locked 33s and has yet to break it with a 4.0. I drive much harder than he does though. 31s without lift is about the max. If you do flat fenders or a 1" BL and a 2" suspension lift then you can fit 33-35s depending how you set things up.

Watch your local laws on tires sticking out past the fender flares. Some states frown on it some do not care.

So I am at discount tire, and the dude keeps telling me that 31-1050-15 it won't fit on the stock rim and if I want to get diff rims.. Are the stock wheels 15-6 or 15-7? Everywhere I look I see 31/1050/15s on 15-6 and they run fine... Are they just trying to sell me more stuff? So confused.
