Another thread about Differentials on my Jeep again

Ok here goes, D30 in front D35 in back auto trans 2.5L engine. 2001
I have been told here and other boards that the D35 is everything from great to a total pos, and when I say I have 235's on it everybody says I'm good, but I've been told they are total open. My question is how come every time I look for parts I see a set of clutches for mine? and when I was stuck in mud I had one front tire turning and one rear tire turning, but when I got on it I got mud evenly sprayed on both sides of the Jeep, also I figured I'd try the 4hi thing on dry pavement once and all 4 tires chirped a LOT, If they were open there wouldn't happen. Do I have clutches in there somewhere?

Can't swear to every installation, but my D35 is a limited slip... The clutch packs you refer to are in the stock D35 differential and are part of the Jeep Command Trac 4WD system...

The behavior you describe is not inconsistent with an open differential. What did it LOOK like you had in there the last time you had the cover off for a fluid change?

Thanks man, that makes sense, and I'd love to find out they are limited slip, cause if they are and they ever wear out $199 for the clutches is a hellofa lot cheaper than a new rear end.

. Dunno what it looks like I haven't had the covers off yet, but I will need to here soon the front has a minor wet spot on it.

If you only had one front and one rear tire turning, I'm guessing you're open/open. I've got the same setup; 2.5l D30 front and D35 rear open/open, and I can get it evenly plastered with mud as well; it's definitely not a good way to determine what you've got in there. The best way is to just open up the diffs and see for yourself. Good luck.

don't have to open them. I just checked my email Jeep emailed me back today, they are both open.
My guess is I'll probably weld the spider gears in the rear and get a limited or locker for the front when I can afford it.

This may help you
Trac-Lok LSD Install

I ran into the same thing when I changed the spider gears out on my D35 which I always though was an open diff until i took the spider gear set out and found out that i had the factory Trac-Lok system.. its a different carrier and the axle gears have splines on the out side for the clutch packs to go on.

You can check the out side of your diff for a tab that is on the differ cover bolts that should say "use limited slip fluid"

You can tell its kinda hard to see but look at your cover for that tab on your diff housing

Thanks for the info, I bookmarked that page, last diff I worked on I totally screwed the pooch on cause I couldn't get the pinion shaft right or the preload torque on the axle shafts. So I've been basically scared to do anything to a diff since, except change an axle.
