Any engine compatibility gurus?

I am looking to replace my bad engine in my 05 rubi. I am told the only engines that will be a direct replacement would be 2005 or 2006 due to sensors, and computer differences and any 00-04 engines would only be useful as a block. Anyone have any info on this?

My current engine has a spun main bearing and a collapsed lifter, so it has to come out.

Can only tell me if any other engine will work besides the 05-06? I can swap most top end stuff like intakes and cam sensors, but I'm not a motor head.

Thanks in advance.

05-06 is it, unless you want to rip everything off down to long block only.
