any opinions/suggestions on rocker guards

while reading through the forum i have seen alot of posts that say instead of getting side steps or nerf bars, its better to get rocker guards with a step. that being said can anyone recommend a good quality rocker guard which also incorporates/doubles a step? here are a couple i have been mulling over:

121-121 - Olympic 4X4 Products A/T Rock Rails Guards for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ - Quadratec
Body Armor TJ-4121 - Body Armor Rockcrawler Side Guards for 76-06 Jeep® CJ-7 Wrangler YJ,TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec
Olympic 4x4 Products 171-121 - Olympic 4X4 Products Reverse-a-Bars for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ - Quadratec
Rugged Ridge 11504.13 - Rugged Ridge RRC Side Armor Guards in Textured Black for 87-06 Jeep® Wrangler YJ & TJ - Quadratec

a couple notes...
i don't plan on doing any serious rock crawling but it is always a possibility. i also would prefer a rocker guard that bolts on with out too much drilling (if it looks good, i can be persuaded).

Have you looked at these? I've had them on my Jeep for 3 years. 10 minute installation and works as both protection and step

Rampage Products 8625 - Rampage Side Bars in Black for 87-06 Jeep® Wrangler YJ & TJ - Quadratec

Just installed the body armor ones on my TJ yesterday. Very easy install to existing hardware, done in about 15min. Here's a pic.As far as how well they work, don't know haven't had a chance to try them out yet!

I installed a set of Olympic rock rails yesterday on my tj. The series 121 with the tubular rail side step. Installation was fairly easy, only the second mod I have installed myself on my jeep (did a rear bumper replacement last week). Only trick was fishing the mounting hardware out of the tub frame (not main chassis frame) where two pieces fell in or were pushed in. No drill install using existing holes for mounting. I'm on iPhone so can't post a pic but I have a link to my pics at imgeshack on my new member post if you want to search my posts and take a look.

Actually went to a jeep/truck show and bought them there directly from body armor. $210 out the door!

Of those four, I would only consider the first one from Olympic. Tub mounted rocker guards are, surprisingly contrary to what may seem to be right, far stronger and more protective than frame-mounted rocker guards are.

Next, I would look elsewhere than Quadratec to buy anything like that. QT is, by far, the most expensive source for ANY Jeep parts. Even QT's shipping and handing charges are outrageous.

Look too at AtoZ's rocker guards and AEV's.

I would definitely stay with a tub-mounted rocker guard which is far stronger and more protective than any frame-mounted guard could hope to be. A tub mounted rocker guard has no leverage to work against it like all of the frame mounted guards do.

I like tub mounted rockers but i dont see how they are superior to frame mounted rockers. People buy rocker guards to protect there rockers and yet they drill usually 8 holes on each side of the tub to install them... and if you hit something its still in a sense hitting your jeep since they are mounted right on the Jeep, while frame mounted rockers(like links 3 and 4 in the original posting) are not toughing the tub so they take all the impact...thats the way i look at it

The support struts that go between the frame and frame-mounted rocker guards are like big levers against the frame mounts. They flex, they can't be made strong enough not to, and let frame-mounted rocker guards bang into the tub. There is no way to make that mount strong enough to not allow that flex.

Tub mounted rocker guards take the impact and distribute it along the entire bottom of the tub, the force isn't absorbed by those bolts on the side. There is no leverage available to work against tub-mounted rocker guards, they combine with an already very strong reinforced rocker (it bolts to the frame in that same area) to form a very strong reinforced area that you're not going to damage without some MAJOR forces at work.

Go to any serious rock crawl event where exposure to such potential damage is routine and you'll find 100% rocker mounted guards. You won't find a single frame-mounted guard. Not to mention the frame-mounted support struts just give the obstacles two more points from which to hang the Jeep up on.

well Jerry i guess i see your point, What bugs me about the tub mounted is drilling, im just afraid to drill into the tub, because for some odd reason what if you take them of, your left with a bunch of holes. I dont know im just funny about it.

have you looked at bluetorchfabworks? they have guards with the tube and without the tube. they come unfinished so you can paint them whatever color you want. and more importantly, they are very reasonable and strong.

I just installed a set of sliders from Shrockworks and I love 'em! Not only do they look great installed, but they also offer incredible strength and support. I did quite a bit of research before I purchased these. There are some other great products out there (A to Z, AEV, PSC, LOD), but I found myself coming back to these every time.

And I agree with Jerry from above: I wouldn't recommend purchasing sliders from Quadratec either. You'll spend nearly the same amount in shipping as you do for the sliders! Although QT has one of the largest online inventories for Jeep products, I usually only use their site as a source for product research. I find what I want and try to buy from a retailer with better pricing and shipping.

I'll try to post some pics of my Shrockworks rock rails later...

Good luck!

Once installed, you'll never want to take your rocker guards off. Drilling that first hole in a Jeep is hard for some but when you're adding protection, a few holes here and there aren't going to hurt your Jeep or its resale value.
