Question Any prefer SWB over Unlimited?

I've done enough research to determine some of the advantage of the Unlimited (more storage, more leg room, better ride, ect.), but how many of you PREFER the SWB Wranglers and why?

I would say swb. Think of some crew cab f250, lockers, gears, 1000 hp engine.(make belive) This thing could still get cought up because its too damn long. It would look like a see-saw on some rocks. Of course i know the Lj is not that long but same principle. Plus they look like shit.....

i'm gonna have to go with the swb as well. that's what jeep has always been and it's blasphemy to stretch the wrangler of all things to make the masses happier with a convertible suv.

SWB for a trail jeep, as I have seen too many of the Unlims get caught up on stuff that swb go right over. This was both in stock form and one on 35's. But in the end , get which one YOU like the best.

SWB can really help offroad...i've heard the same thing about SWB's being better offroad from many magazines also...for instance in the unlimited the rear of the jeep hangs off the tires too much and if you goin down a rock the rear can bottom out on the rock...plus i think the SWB's look a lot better anyway

Turning radius as well. Runnin tight trails must be a pain in the ass in that longer wheel base unlimited. I know nothing turns on a trail like my short wheel base jeep does.

The Unlimited provides a good compromise to 95% of Jeep owners with regard to retaining outstanding manueverability and terrain abilites vs. interior space and comfort.

For those into extreme Jeeping (rock climbing, etc.) the SWB is the only way to go, but for MOST of us, the Unlimited is probably more than adequate for the terrain we traverse.

The looks issue is subjective, of course, conditioned by 6 decades of SWB Jeeps.

I have a SWB TJ, but if I could have bought an Unlimited for the same price as mine, I would have gone for it given my relatively mild demands on its abilitity.

If you travel where high-centering is a big possibility, then the Unlimited is not for you, but if otherwise, it's worth a look. I am tired of having to decide what to leave at home when I take the Jeep. That goes back to my first Jeep, a '71 CJ5 I bought in '72 34 years ago.

It's all a matter of opinion - I have a friend with a Rubicon Unlimited, 5 1/2 Clayton longarm.....he ran this weekend with some fellows that compete in Nueroc and didn't do too shabby. He loves his LJ (he has lots of trail time and ran a TJ before buying his second LJ) It's a fact about the wheel base and turning, but you need to decide what your needs/wants are.

how will you be using your Jeep?

if you do rock crawling then the unlimited could be either/both good or bad...the longer wheelbase is good because it adds stability, it's bad because you could get high centered over a rock or come down on a rock

True.

While approach and departure angles are nice to know, one has to remember EACH AXLE has its OWN approach and departure angle, and the one that often counts is the departure of the front axle, and the approach of the rear axle.

It doesn't do you much good to have a 45 deg approach angle in the front, if half way DOWN that obstruction the transfer case hangs up on it and high centers you! It is all complicated by the SHAPE of the obstruction, since a more gradual slope of it at the top allows the rear wheels to start raising the chassis as they start ascending the obsticle. A SWB means the rear wheels contact the obstruction sooner, and start raising the transfer case possibly before it contacts the ground.

The only place the bare published approach/departure angles
"rule" is in a concave depression (like crossing a ditch, or a dip) where the clearance of the center chassis actually increases during the crossing.

Unfortunately, before you can get INTO the ditch (or exit it completely), you have to go over the concave portion at the top, and then crest the other concave portion at the top.

The ultimate ORV would have tires with diameters equal to the wheelbase, so there was no space between the tires, but that wouldn't be very practical or stable in most situations.

The Argo (and similar) wheeled vehicles, along with track vehicles (like Snocats bulldozers, tanks, tracked skid-steer Bobcats) attempt to accomplish this in different ways, but end up creating their own compromises and problems in the bargain.

I will agree with the caveat that they start to look right on 37" tires and bigger.. Then the extra wheelbase is a plus on climbs.

I personally prefer the look of the SWB Wrangler. However I will some day stretch my wheelbase on mine to be in the 102 or so range. The wheel base is great, but I just don't like the look of that huge side window.

wow dude thats what i was thinking...i was thinkin of pics of the unlimited in my head and all of the freakin awesome ones i thought of had 37's...i thought of one with a 6 inch long arm and 37 inch mud grapplers that looked sweet and one with a 5.5 long arm and 37 inch crawlers...thats very true...they start lookin good when big tires are put on...don't look too great until then

'Course I think that ALL Jeeps should come with 35's and we start building from there....

It's Good My Self-Esteem Isn't Tied to This Thread!

As an Unlimited owner ('04), my self-esteem has been crushed by the flood of anti-unlimited comments. Of course I'm only kidding as I have been on both sides of the "fence" having had an '01 SWB before the new one. There is no question the SWB has far greater manueverability and tighter turning radius (which is the one thing I miss the most) but I really can't complain about the overall offroad capability (as long as someone is there front and back to winch or snatch in a pinch).

But, it was fun last year at the Snowshoe WV Jeep Jamboree being the first of the day and one of only three in the group to climb 15' up a muddy 60 degree rock wall, dropping over and into a couple of feet of mud, followed by a hard right in the muck and an immediate hard left over a 2' rock ridge and up not quite a quarter mile of pure tire spinning slop to the top in less than a minute after watching nearly every other who preceeded and followed have to be winched at the first ledge and often for the second time over the ridge, including mostly SWBs.

But, I will be totally honest in saying that was one of the few times that a LWB mattered; the day before the LWB required a number of hands-on rockin' times to get over some simple stuff in the trail. A LWB is good for hauling extra gear but I must admit I wouldn't want to be alone deep in the woods without a winch or a hi-jack.

I own a 05 jeep unlimited and never had a problem out on a trail and i have been in mud and rocks, been to big bear and mojave had no trouble cause its a LWB jeep. Oh yeah and it does not look goofy. I like the unlimiteds cause i can pack alot of tooks and such with me when go out on a trail. Actually i think the jeep unlimited look alot better then the SWB jeep, but then again it all up to the person.

Oh yeah hmenker my unlimited is impact orange.

Alright! Go Impact Orange!

Hey, JeepGuyLJ, thanks for sharing the pics. When I purchased my '04, the only color available at that time was silver and you could only get an automatic transmission which I REALLY dislike. I don't mind the color too terribly because it doesn't show the day-to-day dirt, but I've always wanted the impact orange. And, I've gotten used to the tranny for offroad in spite of my objections. You're right about the additional space being a plus because I've often had SWBs ask if they could put some of their stuff in my "trunk" when we're offroading.

A jeep is made to be used with the top down. The Unlimited looks like a station wagon with the top cut off, the full doors really make it look weird....I'm sure it fits a lot of peoples needs, probably for older jeepers....I'm almost 60 and still don,t like them.

I thought about trading my '02 TJ for an unlimited just stop my wife from complaining about not have room for anything. Once I put her and my 2 daughters in the Jeep there's not room for anything. Good thing my dog can run fast.
