Have been reading about tranny noises etc. Don't think I have any problems but would like to be more sure.
Bought a 99 TJ with 79K, 2.5 L with 5 speed. Never offroad, not jacked up. Shifts well, clutch seems ok, AC works fine, no rust except under passenger's front carpet and then a wire brush and Rustoleum took care of it. New ball joints under front, front end tight, no wobbles.
Needed some TLC cosmetically but no dents and no rust. I do not think it ever was abused, just somewhat neglected cosmetically.
Now I know Jeeps are noisy - that's fine - I just do not know HOW noisy is "OK."
In particular when I accelerate I hear tranny noise - what I think sounds like simply the tranny speeding up. I have a 97 F-250 Power Stroke with the 5 speed ZF tranny and THAT is noisy as hell - I was warned about it from a reputable shop - and nearly indestructible. The Jeep sounds like a smaller version of the F-250. I wouldn't call the noise either of them makes a "whine" but it gets higher pitched of course as i speed up.
Anyway, is there anybody in the Jacksonville Florida or Orange Park Florida area with a lot of TJ experience who can take a drive with me on Sunday? I am not exactly flush but I will buy lunch and a six pack.....
