Thanks, but I already have a d44 and like I said dont have the cash to swap or regear right now. did you only do the rear?

I have 31s on now... well what should be 31s . and I have plenty of power, if I use the gas. but I tend to just putt around now to save as much gas as I can. with 33s Im sure Ill just have to use more gas and still be able to go the same speed I do now, just with less mpgs. Im going to keep my eyes open and visit some junk yards this spring for a d44 and d35 front with 3.73s to swap in. few jeeps around here, so it will be hard to find one, but if I do odds are It will still have all the goodies

If all else fails I will stick with 31s until I can regear. I have a feeling the 33s will not be too bad. But like I said I am gona try and find some 32s if I can - used.
From 3.07 to 3.73 is not much and may not even be worth it. You will be happier with a 4.10 gear if you go with 33's. Believe it or not, a better gas mileage.

I did not regear it myself. I was able to find one on Craigslist that came out of '05 rubicon with factory 4.10 gear.

so you only did rear?

3 speed autos run best with 3.73s opposed to the 5 speed which runs better with 4.10s. at least from everything Ive read. even the fingers of Jerry himself ( I like to talk about him alot)

I will do a swap in the future but for now stick with the gears I have. but now im confused as to if the d44 can even be a 3,07 because someone said it cant?

Yes, I only did the rear. I just got all the parts together for the front re-gear and install Detroit Trutrac but I have no time to have it done.

Actually, Jerry had advised me to get the 4.10 with 33's and the speedometer gear. I took his advice and very happy with it.

I don't believe the D44 comes with 3.07. More likely be 3.73 and 4.10.

I can show you the thread where he said 3speed auto with I6 and 33s -> 3.73. Im sure it doesnt matter, one way you just have a little more power, and possibly better mpg is driven correctly. I will research more on the d44... but Ik they are geared the same because 4wd works great and nothings broke lol. haha if you dont want your front, ill do it.

strike that, apparently I have worse memory than I thought it is 4.10.

I apologize. haha. im sure that 3.73s would still be alot better than 3.07 so if I could only get those I would do it. I live in the middle of nowhere.

Haha he very well could be! I only found 1 other person who said they had a d44 with 3.07s, and they were a newbie in south africa! haha. and I read alot of stuff where people said they thought the d44 had at least 3.73s. if thats true then I will be fine with how the 33s will do.

Haha, okay let me drive my jeep the 3000 miles to you with all my tools. hope thats some good beer...

I also have a D44 in the rear of my 97 TJ and it definitely has 3:07 gears and I will be upgrading to 4:10's along with ARB air locker's and 33's when it comes to tax cheque time. I can't wait.

i run 33's with a 3.07 in my 00' 4.0 5 spd and a 4" lift. It does have lag but not too bad. 5th gear is not useful till about 60. Ill be regearing towards summer, but for the time being its fine. You are oging to find out that a lot of us are running this set up since re gearing is so pricey.

02 TJ with 3.07's and 33'' tires. I NEED TO REGEAR!!!! I hate having to be on the gas all the time. With it being a 4 speed auto I can't go too high or it will put more stress on the engine and tranny. Thinking about 3.55's or 3.73's

Welcome! Charge it on your credit card and pay it off once Uncle Sam pays you.

Too bad for me cause I have to pay back Uncle Sam...I just can't win!

You said you have a D44? On the Jeep now? With 3:07 gears?

And you would either want to keep your D30 in front or put in a D44, never saw a D35 in the front......
I've driven IG's rig, and it handles good on the road. You'll be fine until you can afford to re-gear.

Okay sounds good guys. Ideally I will try to get both swapped out for 4.10s and still have a d44, but if I have to regear I will. I dont know if I trust anyone in my local area to do my regear so I have a feeling Ill be driving to the city to get it done.

I was just told by Jerry that the d44 only have 3.73s but a few of you say you have them haha. I really wish I knew. are they original?

I just did the spin test. Jacked up rear, put in neutral, blocked the wheels and put jack stands under, marked axle and tire with piece of tape with paper on it and spun tire one full turn. counted the times axle rotated... 1.5 spins. the shaft between the d44 and the transmission right? thats where I had it. so that means 1.5 gears that doesnt exist. apparently I am confused on how to do this test or something. I did it like 30 times and ever had someone else turn the wheel while I counted and got the same.... Im thoroughly perplexed.

I noticed that too but wasnt gona be mean about it, jeez :P

haha I run 2700 rpms at about 80 mph or so right now with 31s (really 29ish)... so who knows. and IG I figured out what my odo is off by exactly tonight. drove to my gfs house in my parents suburban the other day, and got 23.5 miles. map quest says its 24. my jeep got 17.9 both ways, exactly. So, do the average of those then find the percent, my odo only shows 75% of the miles I actually drive. that matches up with showing 40 at 52 = 77%

Anyways, that changes my mpgs from around 12 to 15-17 depending how I drive. happy.
