Are wheel spacers right for me

Need a little advise. I'm running 35's with rims i really like but the backspacing is around 4". I have not done much offroading yet as i've been building up the jeep. Looking at the distance between the the rear spring and my new 35" side wall, I only have about 1/2 inch of clearance. Do I need wheel spacers to keep from tearing up my tires?

1/2" is close but i'd be more worried about it in the front. personally i would change wheels before installing spacers.

If your going to run spacers make sure you get hub-centric, like these spydertrax.





Not these..





I have had spydertrax on my JK for about 30,000 miles and have not had a single issue, on road, offroad...nothing.

Seems to me that hubcentric spacers are only really necessary when using stock rims that are hubcentric. Most aftermarket rims are not hubcentric so it makes HC spacers unnecessary. I may be wrong...

I put a set of 1.5" spidertrax on mine due to the 33x12.50s having no clearance on stock rims. Was a cheaper fix then having to buy the new rims right away. No problems with them at all. But like said above....dont go cheap with them, or you will regret it.

If your wheels truly have 4" of backspacing and they are 15x8, that is absolutely perfect for 35x12.50 tires. Use no spacers for that combination!

And being hub-centric or not has absolutely no effect on any of this. The factory wheels are hub-centric, very few aftermarket wheels are and it really doesn't affect anything.

The below illustrates how backspacing is measured... the yellow tape measure is measuring the wheel's backspacing... the distance from the inner-most edge of the wheel to the wheel's mounting flange.

Thanks for the comments--tonight i'll check the actual BS, I'm certain it's at least 4 inch's might be 4.25 though.
I am running 16x9's and don't have any issues up front after I added two washer to the steering stops.
I'm running flat 6" BW flares which cover all the tread so I don't get much if any water/mud etc--which is great. But with only a half inch between the rear coils and tire I'm wondering if that just too close when flexing offroad.

4.5" works but you'll probably get a bit of inside sidewall rub while moving when the steering wheel is turned all the way left or right. No worries, five cents worth of washers will fix it... Jeep Steer Stop Adjustment

Just jack one corner up at a time. I have jacked my jeep up dozens of times after modifying or sliding the axles around. Chock it up, disconnect the front swaybar & jack one corner up until the other tire comes off the ground as well. You will be at full flex & now you can look & see your clearances. Just be careful. Also go slow. You need to be looking at brake lines, wires, breather hoses, steering components. I had to disconnect & reroute emergency brake lines, lengthen brake lines & wires to get mine to full flex. Over extension straps are a good idea too. I adjusted mine to get tight right after my coils were about to pop out of their upper sockets. I ran them up through the coils themselves so I can't lose them on the trail. Works well.

lot's of folks think spacers are just another cool mod that only costs 200 bucks. When in fact, or should I say, IMHO, they are a bit of a bandaid solution to fix rubbing issues.

The further you bump your wheels out, the more stress you have on bearings & steering components. Some on here do it sorely for looks. I'm not a fan of the "Scateboard" look. That being said, if your backspacing is 6" w/o spacers and you rub, then you add your 1.5 spacers which brings you to 4.5". There will be no more stress on your jeep with the spacers vs a new set of wheels that have a 4.5 BS.

I'm not a big fan of spacers, however I ran 1.5's until I could afford new wheels with the proper BS. Ran em for over a year w/o a single problem.

If you get them I would get hubcentric ones, propery lok tite & torque them down & buy the proper hub rings & installl them. I bought mine off of Amazon for 12 bucks.

I ran 4.5" of BS (with 33x12.50 and 35x12.50 tires) for years on trails where the suspension is pushed to (and sometimes almost beyond) its limits and it works fine. If I had a choice between my present 3.75" and 4.5" of backspacing with my present wheels, I'd take the 4.5".

One other thing that hasn't been offered would be to trim the rear spring bucket.
By that I mean to actually cut about 1/2" to 3/4" off the outside of the spring bucket (seat). It will not affect the spring and will give your tire sidewall something (the spring) to rub on that will not cut it.
The cut should be a straight cut parallel with the tire sidewall. Make the edges smooth and with nothing sharp left to make the work hard on the tire.
Most times you won't need any spacers by doing this.

If you do use the spacers... make sure to use a torque wrench any time you mount or dismount them or the tires/wheels. A little lock tite on the spacer is a good idea as well.
