ok. so i started a thread a while back looking for opinions and advice!!!!
ive got a 97-4cyl-auto.!!!!ive got a 3 inch lift and im running 33's now i was told she was regeared to 4.88....TOLD.....when i bought the jeep !!!
NOW due to my obsessive personality and a sneaky suspicion he had no idea the gear ratio i opted for a diff service just so i could have a look see...
BOOM i was right low and behold stamped right on that gear was 41x9 and if im not mistaken thats a 4.56 ratio.
now im ok with how she does on then streets and highway but strictly OFFROAD speaking with the 4cyl..AUTO..33'S AND 4.56 GEARS.LOCKERS IN THE REAR.....am i really gonna left behind or get embarrased on the trails...ive done some minor wheeling here and there but nothing crazy....BUT I WANNA PUT HER TO THE TEST
should i just try and sell her to get a more powerfull offroad machine..or should i keep investing in my baby to keep her on trucking..i.e. front lockers,wench....
You have about what I have. 4.0 with 4.56 Gears on 33" tires. Nobody leaves me behind. 4.88 would be optimal if you have an automatic transmission or running 35's with a manual. A four banger would be a whole other story.
should i just try and sell her to get a more powerfull offroad machine..or should i keep investing in my baby to keep her on trucking..i.e. front lockers,wench....
Just go out wheeling with a few experienced guys on more testing trails and see how you do. Hit up your local forums and meet some people. If you get stuck, theyll be there to help. Id worry more about checking everything out mechanically before hitting the trails. Id be mad at myself going out there and get stuck bc of something breaking on my jeep, opposed to the jeep not being "able" to handle the trails.
Alright good deal... As for mechanically I've already covered my basis... Had governor repaired.. Exhaust manifold replaced(was warped from a bolt snapped off in head).. Fuel system flushed and cleaned ... Front and rear diff's serviced.. Full synthetic oil changeable filter ... All inspected and tuned by local...
I'm running 4:88 on 33's (until I get 35's) with a 2.5 and a 5 speed and it's winding out quick. If I was going to stay with 33's, highway use would suck with 4:88's.
Thanks a lot guys I feel better about keeping it.. That's why I wanted to do !! Now !!!!!!! What to do with tac money hummmmm... I'm thinking matching ox locker for the front, a nice WINCH( not wench I already have one of those ) and I think mb upgrading the suspension a little the lift on there now is a bit sketchy it looks like home-made spacers with rough country shocks!!!
