Great in the rear if you don't have the TurD35 and don't live in a winter climate. People like them in the front more then I do offroad.. Not noticeable at all when in 2wd on the road.. That being said if you live in a winter climate and have a front auto locker you need to stay in 2wd no matter the road conditions. The front auto locker causes steering issues on slick winter roads. Rear auto locker on road packed road snow will cause the rear to fish tail.. Leaving you needing to use 4wd and to drive even more attentive on said slick roads with a rear auto locker..
Automatic lockers are superb in the right axle and environment, I had a pair of them in my last TJ. What axles do you have and will you ever using your TJ in 4x4 on snow or ice covered roads?
I've had them in the front and rear of different jeeps. I do prefer them in the front but it will make it a real bear to steer in 4wd.
I had an Aussie in the front of a XJ I used to have and had no problems driving in the snow on the road. I also took my time and slowed way down when making sharp turns.
Well I got the info I needed, I do live in snow climate and drive all conditions, thanks for the info. Now I will go with lockers, what kind of advise can I get on these, again this forum rocks and thanks in advance for the info.......d30 and d35
Don't lock your D35. So front is your only current safe option. If you can afford a selectable locker such as ARB go for it. If not then go with a Aussie and just be careful on snowy roads. stay in 2wd as much as you can and drive very carefully
Yep the only way I'd lock a Dana 35 is with Superior Axle's Super 35 kit. And be wary, there are other copycat manufacturers that have stolen/copied the Super 35 kit name since Superior Axle failed to copyright it but most are junk.
I put on the super 35 with a full locker; and a box locker front with
upgraded shafts/spiders.. a re gear to 456 and WOW.
I tried it out in some muddy watery areas and it performs great. Prior to getting the lockers and re gear, I would not have though I would make it through where I idled through today.
On the easier stuff I just used the rear locker and 2wd.. it was most impressive as well..one big difference is there was not much control in trying to change from one rut to another, etc. I had to give it a little more throttle, too but not enough to rooster tail mud, the great thing is I could idle at anything over 1400rpm's and it would just cross all the mud, crawl through the slop and over the top with great control over the line I chose or switched to..
I would say that it will be pretty surprising to have any other modification make such a noticeable difference in driving experience.

I have 0 experience with lockers so I have a couple of questions because I've considered a lunchbox for the front. I understand why they don't turn well but is this in every turn or just sharp turns? For example I'm driving on the road in the snow (4wd on) and come up on a normal sweeping turn. Will I notice it wanting to go straight in that situation or is it more like sharp turns like turning into a driveway or parking lot? Second I've heard they are bad to "crab walk" in off camber situations. Is this true?
