auto tranny stuck in 1st

My 01 TJ is stuck in 1st gear. I have tried switching it from 1st 2nd and drive but it wont budge. I checked the fluid but it was fine. It will go into reverse and park though. Anyone know any tips to help fix it before i take it to the shop. Thanks

Anyone know of a good independent jeep mechanic in mobile alabama?

Sounds like it went in to "limp mode". I had a Dakota that did that. Not sure what exactly went wrong with it. Hope I helped a little

As far as I know ist the computer sensing something is wrong and it's shutting it's self down to prevent further damage .

This happened to me about a year ago. Turn off engine, disconnect battery, let it rest 5 mins or so and re-connect battery. This did the trick for me. Then I took it to the dealer, had them check it out. Dealer said sometimes an electrical glitch happens--these things are all electronic now. Anyway, my Jeep is an '04, with only 40,000 miles, but still WAY out of warranty, and the dealership reflashed the trans computer NO CHARGE just to be sure. No issues since...

By the way, LIMP MODE is something the computer will do if it senses certain things wrong to HELP keep the drivetrain from killing itself.

There is no limp mode for 2002 and older TJ transmissions, that didn't come along until 2003 when the automatic transmission switched from the purely hydraulic 3-speed 32RH to the electronically controlled 42RLE 4-speed automatic.

Has anyone misadjusted the TC cable (kickdown cable) that connects between the throttle body lever at transmission? My bet is this is going to require a trip to a transmission specialist. I would avoid the big chain shops like AAMCO who will very likely rip you off. Instead, I'd look for a small independent shop that is a member of the BBB (Better Business Bureau). Then I'd call them and ask if they are famillar with the Torqueflite 999 family of transmissions which your 32RH is a member of. If they're not, I'd keep looking until I found a shop that was. Good luck with it.

Check out Transmission Magicians. I paid them a visit several years ago when I was doing mechanical inspections. Seemingly a very professional run operation and by far the cleanest shop I've ever walked into.
