Auto-Trans Shift at HIGH RPM

I have a 2004 Rubicon with Auto-transmission. When normal driving the tranny shifts fine but when I am accelerating hard the RPM's going from 4th to overdrive get really high. Today I stood on it hard and it acted like it hit a rev limiter and the check engine light came on.

Any possibility that this is a minor issue??

Pretty sure that's a jeep thing. I've my grand Cherokee and my dads both did that. As well as my wrangler. Pretty sure its their "trademark" im not an expert by any means but I think its normal.

Edit. I didn't read your check engine light went on. Not sure about that. I know when I go to pass someone or go up a hill and get into it mine goes from about 2500 to about 4k or so. But no check engine light.

The OD clutches are usually weaker than the other gear clutches. How fast were you going? How many miles on the trans? Still have the same fluid? Do the other gears slip at all at WOT?

I was probably between 40mph and 55mph. 110,000 on the tranny. New to me vehicle but the fluid is red and smells fine. None of the other gears have any issue that I can feel.

Sounds normal to me for the 42rle tranny. IMO, it shifts into OD way too early unless you romp on it.

I cannot stand it when people don't post their fix to an issue so here it is......

The coil was off 15 degrees so the 2nd and 3rd cylinder were misfiring when I reached high RPM's. The tranny checked out fine.

HOWEVER! while it was on the lift they found my front drive shaft was coming apart so it is being rebuilt.

Damn I love this Jeep Stuff!
