Auto trans shift problem!!!!

So here I was today with a friend heading out in the desert mountains to camp out, halfway there I can't seem to get my trans into low 1. I ignore it until I go to stop to pull my disco's and I cannot get the beeeyyyoootch into park WTF?.... So now I have no park and no Low 1, We decide that it would be who of us to leave and head back into town just in case my trans was crapping out, any ideas??????? What could this be? any help? 2004 TJ 42RLE trans

Just had this happen to me in my '05 Wangler Unlimited w/Auto Trans. Fellow Jeepster saved me $$ by doing the following:

From the cockpit, take the shift "T" handle off. To do this, put key in ignition; shift transmission into neutral. Push shift button in as far as possible (hard), then simultaneously pull with all your might. T-handle should come off. Don't worry, if you pull straight up, you won't brake it.

There will be a small plastic object inside the shifter shaft. Pull it up. Mine was about 3.5" - 4" long. (My buddy's was same length, so guessing yours will be same.) Looks like it has lobes on it. This "thingy" has broken at the bottom. Take this and cut a small diameter wooden dowel to match length-my dowel diameter was 3/16" I think. While you are at it, make 2 - one for spare. Keep in glove box.

Drop the cut dowel down the shifter shaft. Replace T-handle. Poof, should work. Let me know...

Had something similar happen on a GM car too, the plastic rod breaking. By low one you mean P R N D 2 1 right? Just to be sure.

So I did what I B Jeepin said and sure enough that little plastic piece that looks like a set of anal beads was broken, however, it has broken so far down the dowel pin trick doesn't work. Now it's stuck in park, looks like I will have to replace the entire shifter assy

V8 swap

Can anyone give me pointers on this procedure, just in case I decide to drop a small block in this Jeep. It's a 99 Jeep Wrangler. 2.5. Thanks!!
