Unhappy automatic top help

Someone please help! I just got a jeep 2 days ago. A used jeep with an automatic top. I can open and close it just by holding down a button. My top was working great and then today I unhooked it ready to put the top down and it will not go down. I keep trying to press the button and it won't work and I have stopped out of fear that I will really ruin it. It almost sounds/seems like its jammed or stuck?!I don't know I just need advice or ideas. I'm a girl who is new to jeeps so I'm really lost with this.

I don't think many people, if any, have the power top on this forum. You may have better luck contacting the manufacturer of the top.

You have a wrangler with an automatic top, check your fuses it may have fried one or the switch is broken. I still can't believe you have an auto top.

Does it make any kind of noise or is just dead? Check fuse like mentioned. We need a video of the auto top in action when you get it fixed.

I'll never understand why girls, preface technical questions with "I'm a girl", as if you are automatically some kind of moron just because you have internal genetalia.

You can do it!

Honestly I would be just as lost as you with this, and I'm a moderately mechanically inclined PERSON. Being a dude has nothing to do with it.

We need some more details to help you diagnose the issue.

How does it work? What's the normal operating procedure?

Okay I'll check the fuses, thanks guys! I bought this car from someone else and so I don't know much about the top or where it came from. Like I will press the button for it to go back and it will make a noise like it's trying to go back but it's jammed but it's only for a second. I really hope I get this fixed because i fell in love with the automatic top.

It's not a fuse. If it was a fuse nothing would happen. It's probably a jammed cable

sounds like you need to download or find the instructions on using the "auto" top, is something not unlatched that should be?

Wow! Someone actually bought one of these things. This is the first I've ever heard of someone actually owning one. Unfortunately it's in regards to it not working.

Unfortunately finding an instruction manual of some sort will be your best bet. Check the top for any brand markings or manufacturer name. They would be the best ones to help you. Your top is aftermarket and not from Jeep.

Good luck and welcome to the Jeep Life!

Wonder if that top still uses the sunrider feature and the sliding locks are not moved into the fold back position. That may keep it from going down ?? Just a thought.

Does it have a Sunrider function like the OEM tops? If so, have you made sure you released the sunrider latches at each door surround? That could be what's holding it in place and not letting it go down.

They make them with power tops? on the Wrangler? I had no clue that even existed or anyone would even want that. Is this an aftermarket feature or an OEM option you can get?

Honestly I'd say ditch and it just do it manually(if you can, not sure if you can since it's powered). I can have my top down and ready to go in maybe 3 minutes with minimal work and getting it back up maybe 5-6 minutes tops unless the zippers on the windows give me a hard time

Sounds like the auto feature actually makes it more of an annoyance rather than a luxury of convenience.

As for the issue. It could possibly just be that the motor is going in the device. Losing power before it dies completely like a death rattle which makes it seem like it's snagging up.

That or check the wiring and make sure everything is hooked up solid. No loose wires or a loose ground causing the motor to not funtion at 100% so that it can't move the top.

Are you pressing the brake while pressing the top down button?

Wow! For those prices you could just hire someone to come lower and raise it for you for cheaper. Like a trunk midget or something.

Just looked at her profile - this is a TJ not a JJK so these tops are wrong. Further googling in progress.....

Apparently Barkertop made a power top for the TJ but their website is down, the may be out of business. Can't find any links to any kind of documentation for it but sever links to various boards that talk about it.

Jessie, you may be better off to go into the TJ area and ask your question.

Yeah - Barker Top went into receivership at the beginning of 2004, it appears to be dead.

Here's the best link I found that describes the top;

The top was about 5000. I've love it though. I could just stop at a red light press, unlatch and press a button. Super easy and fun to show off. lol. I fell in love with it right when it started messing up though. Im just gonna drive it to the shop now and ask.
