automatic tranny problems

hello all.....I own a 98 tj automatic 3 speed....first question what is the model number for this transmission....second there is a shifting problem between 2nd and 3rd gear (cold tranny), it doesnt want to shift...i took it to AAMCO and they said it was a seal that needed to be replaced and while the tranny was apart they should do a rebuild of it ($1100)!!...where can i get a rebuild kit for this particular transmission and has anyone else had this problem?

What engine do you have? If you have the 4.0L, then you have a 32rh, and if you have the 2.5L, then you have the 30rh.

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

AAMCO is the very LAST place I'd take any of my vehicles to, they have quotas to fill and aren't known for their absolute honesty because of that. Find a small independent transmission shop that is also a member of the BBB. If you are in SOCAL, I have a good Jeep-friendly transmission shop recommendation for you.

Your tranny might just need either an ATF flush or to have its bands adjusted and AAMCO is just blowing smoke.

I had the same problem last year with my 97, except it wouldn't shift to 3rd when it was warmed up. I changed fluid and filter adding in a pint of Marvel Mystery oil and it cleared up the problem and bought me some time. I eventualy replaced the tranny with a used one from Davey's cost me $700 shipped.
