For most men its a little lower than that

anyhow the 2 reasons that got me towards the manual is
1.. fun..
2... 5 speeds instead of 3.

I drive a manual and like it, I also have a car with an auto, in my mind my jeep wouldn't be any fun with an auto but thats just how I feel.
Go with what you like, but don't think it is impossible to handle the rocks with a manual, because you definatly can, its just different, and are there times where you would prolly be like "man this would be much easier with an auto!" yes, but will there be enough of those times that an auto would make sense to buy, not for me, but all comes down to your opinion, and oh yeah, thats the one thing that sucks about my stick, is its hard to eat a baconater while driving stick.

My Jeep is my toy therefor I prefer to have manual. I like the fac that I can switch gears even while climbinh hills. sometimes I go from 1st to second and sometimes I go from 2nd to first,. When I need to roll back and forth it's also easier with a stick. Just prefernce really. I think both transmission will do juts fine wheeling. The stick is more fun for me

Some vehicles just fit better with a stick. Fast sports cars and jeeps seem right with manuals. Family cars, SUVs, and big pick-ups seem better off with autos. I like my 6 speed, but if I was doin a lot of crawlin I could see the advantage to an auto fer sure.

Since you live in Arizona where you have some awesome rock crawling available to you, I would go with the automatic. In fact, I recently completed converting my '97 from a 5-speed to an automatic solely because I enjoy rock crawling so much.

Go to a championship level event sometime and you'll notice the automatics are what nearly all the high-end rock crawlers have been running for years now. You'd be hard-pressed to find a manual transmission in a purpose-built rock crawler any more.

I put 174,000 miles on my TJ's 5-speed and the more I wheeled the big rocks, the more I noticed I was in the minority with that transmission.

More importantly, the more I wheeled in the big rocks, I noticed how much better the automatics were for the toughest conditions, especially where control is concerned. I did my first offroad trip a couple weeks ago with the new automatic and wow, it transformed my Jeep. It has more low-end torque now, and significantly better control on the big rocks which was my primary reason for converting to the automatic.

Having driven manual transmissions since around 1964, go with the automatic. The tougher the trail, the more an automatic shines. Sports car? Manual transmission. Baja 500 racer? Manual transmission.

Trail Jeep? Automatic.

That's the way to go... because

1. More control
2. More gears
3. More control
4. Can't imagine a 4 cylinder with an automatic, my friend has a hard time on the freeway with his auto loaded on a hill, and he has a 6.
5. More Control.
6. Seems to be better on a steep downhill just let it take itself down, and don't have to use brakes.
7. Oh yes, and did I mention more control.

OK, so I have not done much rock crawling, so I'll leave that to the "real" jeepers.

I like my automatic. Manual drive gets on my nerves. I like to drop it in D and go.

The only thing that bugs me when i'm driving my manual, is when im stopped at a stop light and I take off when it turns green, the people behind me are on my butt till i get up to the speedlimit. especially shifting from 1st to 2nd, when im lookin in the mirror it looks like some people almost rear end me. I swear that some of these people with automatics have a toggle switch for the throttle. Either its OFF or its ON. Thats my only complaint on the manual. It makes me nervous when i have alot of traffic behind me, especially if they are impatient for me to get up to speed by going through the gears.

x2 - they can get over. In fact, I always wonder if my speedo is off 'cause the bastards are flying past me.

you never konw, some one might have swapped the speedo gear and then put the stock tires on when selling it without messing with the old gear

Nah - it's accurate. I just drive the speed limit. If I speed, there's a cop undoubtedly there to catch me. If someone else is speeding, no cop in site. Just pisses me off!
