Thumbs down Awkward Aftermarket Drain Plug..Anyone Have This?

I'll post a picture of it soon. I went to change to oil for the first time today on my LJ and I remembered the fella that sold it to me telling me to use a specific supplied piece to do so. I went and grabbed it, it was just a 6" length of hose, with a female brass fitting on the end, in the center of the fitting was a pin/pusher. On the oil pan, I unscrew a brass cap, and then screw this hose with the fitting onto that, the pusher pushes in a ball when the fitting is fully screwed in, which allows the oil to trickle out. When I say trickle, I mean barely noticeably faster than those last few drops that come out when you NORMALLY change your oil. It's been draining for a solid 20 minutes now, still going at the same pace as it was when I started. The guy who sold it to me was kind enough to supply the original drain plug...but I'm pretty sure he tapped the oil pan to make the other fitting sit in there. So that's pointless. I was just wondering if this is a common aftermarket thing for jeeps, or if that guy was just a jerk who liked taking an hour to change his oil every time? Maybe I'm just doing it wrong some how?

Sounds like the Drain is Clogged maybe.

I know what Drain System you're Talking about. I've never Used them though.

I Use the Fumoto Valve instead. Works VERY well.

I just looked up that Fumoto Valve..looks pretty awesome! Do you have to push up pretty hard to get it off of the safety catch? I mean, you don't have to worry about it jarring loose or anything?

As far as it being clogged, that's what I'm afraid of. The guy I bought it from wasn't the type to do any major work himself, and I know he didn't pay a garage to drop the oil pan, which looks pretty involved, just to install that plug..I'm guessing whoever did it, him or a garage, did it while the pan was still on..and if they had to tap into it, there might be bits of metal in there which isn't cool.

The Fumoto valve is pretty awesome, I had one on my last TJ and will eventually install another one onto my present TJ. You don't have to push up hard, you just push it over a bit to release it from its catch and then up to open the valve. Kind of like opening a bolt-action rifle. It's definitely not going to jar loose.

Sounds to me like what you have is not the Fumoto, but the Fram Sure Drain.


Much slower then the Fumoto but if you warm the engine up a little at first it doesn't take long. I have the same thing and I start it draining first then grease the Jeep, change the filter and look over the TRE's and everything else up front. By then its usually done, remove the hose and put the oil in.

The Sure Drain is matched to the thread of the original oil pain, so if you want to go back to the plain plug it should thread right in. You dont drop the pan or tap any holes to install it, it just takes the place of the regular drain plug.

When you are Ready to do your Oil Change, just Unbolt the Fitting from the Oil Pan. Don't Use the Tube Attachment Piece, so you can take it Out and See if it's Clogged or if there's Gunk In the Oil Pan.

Is it that hard to remove the drain plug that one of these are necessary. I have done over 30 oil changes on my TJ w/o a hitch. Thats not counting how many I have done on all my other, along with the kids, vehicles.

Few enhancements we add to our Jeeps are "necessary". But the fact I can just slide the catch basin under the Jeep and open the lever to drain the oil pan is pretty darned convenient without having to get my ratchet wrench and 13mm socket out.

Not to mention that if you have a full engine skid as I have, that the ability to attach a vinyl drain tube to it and pass the hose down through the skidplate opening so the oil doesn't spill out onto the skidplate is another very nice benefit.

Thank you! Exactly what I have, I couldn't find a product name or anything on it, so I had no way of researching it. That's awesome that it just bolts in, you just made my day, I'm definitely switching it out next oil change and picking up one of those Fumoto's! Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it!

Exactly why I run the Sure Drain.
My engine skid has a small hole in it and without the tube coming down through that hole it makes a HUGE mess. And it sure beats taking the skid off everytime I change oil.

Your welcome, I would check it to make sure it didnt get plugged up somehow before you spend another 25 for the fumoto. Mine only takes about 10 minutes to drain the engine completely.
