Axel question

I was just wondering why people generally do 8.8 axle swap instead of a 9

Only because 8.8 axles are cheaper and more plentiful plus the 8.8's width is close enough to the Wrangler's so it doesn't need its width to be modified which saves even more $$$.

When you have a choice, buy American.
