axle questions

so i was under the jeep today and noticed my front axle looked alot like a d44, so i checked the rear and that also looked like the d44. i looked online and saw the the rubis came with both front and rear d44 but the sports did not. can i get a second opinion on this? also how can i check the gear ratio when the tag on the diff is missing? thank you

That looks like a Dana 30, the 44 has a bigger ring gear

To determine what gears you have:
Mark the inside of a rear tire with tape, chalk or similar. Do the same on the drive shaft. Jack up the rear and make 1 full revolution of the tire. Ever how many times the drives shaft roates, gives you your gear. For example 3 D/S rotations would be 3.07. 3 3/4 D/S roations would be 3.73... and so forth

Yep that does look a lot like a Dana 44 but rest assured that it is actually a Dana 30. Only the Rubicon gets a Dana 44 at the front and rear.

So far as the ratio goes, is the tag missing from the rear axle too?

Aussies are great for the front axle. Tell us more about your Jeep and how it came from the factory. Engine and transmission type, model year, and whether the Jeep feels peppy or if it really feels like a dog. And what size tires you're running. With that, we may be able to come up with a guess as to what ratio you may have.

How well do they hold up in the rear (35s, my 8.8s junk e-locker died and I need a replacement, was thinking Aussie or Detroit )

It's a 03 sport 4.0 4 spd auto on 255/75-17, it's pretty peppy down low but once I break 75 it def lacks the pep lol.

Got the build sheet from jeep this morning, is a d30 front and d44 rear with 373s. What's the best upgrades for the 30, obviously a locker but are there any issues I should address?

What are your intentions with the jeep? Tire size?

Eventually 35s. Going to be doing the lift in steps, and possibly a tummy tuck.

The Dana 30 is a pretty adequate axle up to 35s locked. If you plan on getting extreme you may consider upgrading the shafts to 27 spline chromoly shafts. There are kits available to upgrade to 30 spline chromo shafts, which have their pros and cons. With 35s you may also look into upgrading your brakes with either high quality pads and rotors, or a full blown Vanco kit.
