Question Baby lift? or Jack it up?

Ok, gotta a question for the more expiereinced Jeep heads out there, I am gettin 31x10.50x15 cooper STT's in a couple weeks and have a stock 2000 TJ. I was planning on getting a Rough country lift that has a 2.5in suspension lift and a 1.25in body lift. that kit is only $390. please don't try and sway me on the tires i'm set on the coopers lol but my question is should i dump the almost 400 bucks into the lift when the tires will fit stock and i only would have the lift to look a lil beefy? or should i forgo the lift save the 400 bucks and just save up for a 4in to 6 inch lift? my ultimate goal is just a daily driver that looks EXTREMELY capable and is FAIRLY capable in mud, and dirt trails. right now i gotta fake it till i make it lol

I just put the same lift on my 98 a couple weeks ago and I'm saving up for some 33s because I think the 31s are going to look a little small on it. I have 265/70/15s on it right now and they look real little. If you go with a 4 or 6in 31s are gonna look like trailer tires. Not knockin the brand by any means I've got Coopers on I'd just go a little bigger if you want it look really capable and be able to handle some trails.

thanks for the input, once i have the funds for a 4 or 6 inch lift i'll upgrade tires to 33's or 35's but for now its either that lift kit with 31's or 31's and no lift.

You could always go with that kit with 31s and sell them after you get the new kit to recoup the cash for more upgrades.

FYI if you go with that lift you might want to go ahead and look into a slip yoke eliminator too. I didn't about it at the time but once I started feeling the vibration on the way to work I decided to forgo tires to save for that so the rear shaft will stop shaking.

I run the rc 2.5 lift with 31's and they don't look too small at all. I could run 32's if I wanted. Here's a pic from last weekend on the trails. The rig is very capable with this set up. A lot more goes into a 4 to 6 inch lift then just lifting the jeep and slapping on new tires. You may have to do a tcase drop to help with the vibes, if you get them with the rc 2.5

Nice rig man! Is that the combo lift or just a 2.5?

Do what will make you happy but I wouldn't invest in anything that I planned on replacing in the near future. Saving money with a goal is the best way to do it. Make a plan and a timeline to get what you want and execute it.

Since you are set on coopers.. in detail 31s, I'd stick with the baby lift.

Here's my 4" lift with 31s.. I agree, they look like trailer tires or donut spare tires lol

I'm upgrading tires and wheels in a fews days though so I won't be with this set up long. I learned the hard way, if you are going with a 4" lift, save some coins for a new skid, SYE, new shaft.

You asked for some one's experience...I ran 31's for SEVERAL YEARS
(I averaged 50K miles per set 2 sets) before I lifted my TJ...and than I only went 2.5" and ran it another 18 months on 31"s before I added BL and 33"s.

Still have the 31's and stock wheels with lots of tread left but wanted more tire.

Here are some pics.....the silver wheels are the stockers

hahaha, that's the jeep life for you!

The PO had put my lift on, but sold the jeep with very small road tires. I had to fix a few things that weren't done correctly with the lift. At the time, the 31's were $50 more per tire, so I just went with 31's. I had 32's on my last rig, and i can't tell any difference on the trails so far with the 31's vs 32's.

I would have preferred to buy a stock rig and do the things that I wanted, but I got a steal on the price, so i couldn't pass it up.

The third pic is Duratrac 33" x12.50s on 15x 8 cragars ....the top in that pic is my winter top....a halftop...I run that from Nov to March than back to the 3 piece jammer duster bikini combo...the back of the tub is used more like a pick-up...'cept when wheeling, than my spare goes back there.

Here is another. Havent gotten any good shots (out of the garage) since install of new parts maybe over the Holidays!!

Everything I have would work with full doors......only caution is the Halftop was not "designed" to work on TJs after '02 however mine is an '04 ...it fits but you have to accept that there will be some changes besides just throwing the top on.

I don't mind, like to talk about Red it is my DD and "light" wheeler. The lift yes and no...same suspension (OME with all the "extras") and a JKS BL was added the same week as the 33"s. The 33"s "fit" with the OME and those wheels on the street but I got the BL MML and Flat flares done that same week before I took it off road....and now my only complaint is the factory skid plate...need a TT which means SYE...I have had no vibe issues. But that is the only GOOD way to loose that skid plate...and a little pricey.

I got Red new in '04 and have done a little at a time and with what I feel to be the Best parts for the money for what I want to do. I also have quick discos from Zone on it as well.

Yeah I didn't know it would be that big of a difference since my connectors broke in half when I took them off from corrosion until I was goin down the highway and I thought the front end was gonna fall out!

Yeah I know it is a little scary to drive on the highway till you get used to it......A fellow Jeeper that I work with has been disco'd to the point of no track bar even, for about 2 years......but his suspension is "right" and solid even with 35"s.

The difference I was talking about was off road when disco'd it was amazing to me how much easier it was on the slick muddy trails without a track bar holding everything in place.

my ultimate goal is just a daily driver that looks EXTREMELY capable and is FAIRLY capable in mud, and dirt trails. right now i gotta fake it till i make it lol[/QUOTE]
Before you bring out the flames hear me out.. according to your first post you want to look beefy with little cash. I bought my wifes TJ with 33's and a 3" body lift,I know keep listening..., We have run this setup and have now saved the cash to go for a full SL, Bl, MML, adjustable track bars, the whole nine. You can go ahead and pay a little more for the 33's which you will use later and get the 3" BL for $180 and still not spend as much as you would have. go ahead and put the savings toward your good lift. I do not recommend this if you will be wheelin' though. I have hit some mud and sand just fine but know the limits of the BL. remember he said fake it till make it.

Haha I have no problem hearing you out thats why I posted the thread, maybe i should explain my situtation, i'm newly married and still in college, 2 yrs loeft on my degree until im active duty army as an officer instead of this crappy reserve pay. i was ready to dump 3K into my TJ this january then last year a pretty lil thing came around and what do you know we got married now that 3K turned into $830 for tires lol so im on a budget for the next year just saving 50 bucks a month to put a lift on and roll these 31's till i can afford 33's.
