Back in a Wrangler...Very Soon

Hi All,

I bought my fist Wrangler new in 2004, a hardtop with an 16. I sold it about a year later when my family, literally overnight, became one person bigger when we permanently took in a relative's 1 year old. My wife didn't like going through the trouble of putting her in a babyseat in the back seat. We've both pretty much regretted that sale ever since.

After a 2-month, 8,600 mile cross country RV trip last year with the family, we decided that pulling a small sedan with a tow dolly just wasn't for us.

The sale of my Ford Supercrew is happening tonight, so...we're geting back into a Wrangler! We're thinking a TJ with relatively low miles, since buying a new car that isn't going to be used for a daily driver isn't an economical choice.

Unfortunately, my RV, despite being a 31' Class A, has a rather mediocre tow capacity of 3,500 pounds. This pretty much limits us to either a 4-banger with my kayak on top and extra fun stuff inside, or an I6 with no extras, so that we don't exceed our capacity. I'm leaning towards the I6 though, and we'll just figure out what to do with the rest to avoid exceeding the tow limit. Either engine will deliver the performance that we will be using the vehivcle for, but I sure did like that 6.

Anyways, I have a couple of decent looking candidates that I'll be looking at over the next week or two. I'll keep everyone posted.

Keith

I don't know much about Class A's as I have a 5th wheel, but members as rv.net might give you some insight on what you "might" be able to do to increase the towing rating or....at least determine if the limit is due to motor, drivetrain, frame, brakes, all the above, etc.

I can identify. I sold my TJ and went 2 months before going to the dealership and buying a Rubicon. I could not go without a Jeep after owning one. My new one isn't leaving my possession except for eventually trading up to a newer model (someday)

Love my Rubi.......

One step closer. My truck's new owner just drove off with it.

Did I say I bought my first Jeep in 2004? Where was I when I wrote that? It was 1994 . I've been gone way too long without.

Did it . '06 X with a 4.0, 71k miles for $11.8K. It has a few little issues...a crack in the windshield and I'll be replacing the rear pinion seal this weekend, but its straight, clean and by all appearances well taken care of. 2,900 miles on the latest oil change and the fluid is still quite clear. I'll be pulling the OPDA too to inspect for unusual wear. Pictures to follow.

Hi All,

Well here it is . I spent the day changing all the fluids except the rear differential and in general tinkering around with it. The tranny had a clear purple fluid in it. I'm sure that means something. I put Synchromesh back in it.

I couldn't get the pinion nut off. PB Blaster didn't touch it and I don't have an impact wrench or a big enough compressor anyway so I guess I'll have to take it in to have the pinion seal changed.

The OPDA drive gear is somewhat worn, but I'm not sure if it looks unusual for 71k. It spins freely and the teeth aren't knife edged or chipped. I suppose I'll get another one and do the zirc mod.

All in all I'm quite pleased with it.

Im guessing you had the Royal Purple Transmission Fluid in your transmission, and if that was the case, you just wasted some really nice stuff. Being still a clearish purple consistency, I would guess it was pretty new.

But I may be wrong as I only used the engine oil, which is a purple color.

Yeah, thats right...Royal Purple. Unfortunately, I didn't get the maintenance history with the vehicle so I wasn't sure if and when it had ever been done. Eh well...at least its nice to know the previous owner used good stuff, further confirming that it just doesn't look good on the outside.

Just got finished ordering some front and rear door sill guards and Bestop seat covers but since we need to keep the weight down that's probably all the mods its going to get.

Looks to me like one of the previous two owners removed the milk jugs. They all came with them from the factory right?

So...probably a pretty dumb question, but there are two sets of knobs on top of the sport bars above the driver and passenger doors, presumably to attach accessory bars in between. I've looked around for factory and aftermarket products to see if anything looks like it would fit, but no real luck. What exactly do these knobs do?

The rig weighs in at 3,450# with half a tank of gas. Perfect for the MH.

Well I've put about 100 otherwise uneventful miles on it this weekend; uneventful if you don't count the extreme highway noise, the sidewinds, feeling every bump in the road, the rattle at idle from what sounds like the cat, and the sore fingers from the two hours it took me to put the soft top back up . I think the 55F temp in the garage probably made the top a little too tight, and starting the zippers was the real issue. Once I figured out that I could run a shoestring in the zipper handles to get good leverage on them, the 1.5 hours for the first window became 0.5 hours combined for the next two.

Welcome back to the Jeep world and CONGRATS on the new (to you ) TJ~

Those knobs on top secure the door surrounds to the rollbar. When you remove the knobs, the door surrounds are removed by pulling away from the rollbar then up out of the tub. I pull my surrounds off when I run topless and doorless all summer.

a quick pic of mine without the surrounds and an extended bikini....

No. Later years of the X had them deleted from the factory; they were replaced with the flat plastic 'plugs' instead.
