Ball Joints or Heim Joints

I did a JK dana 44 front swap to my tj and Im wondering what would be better for the drag link ends. Im thinking the rod is going to be custom made. I didnt get a chance to measure my jeep yet to see how long I need it but Im guessing Im not going to find one the length I need. So im going to make it. I would like to know if ball joints or Heim joints would be better. What do you guys think?

you use tie rod ends. Not ball joints.

Tie Rod End > Heims.

My steering uses heims on the knuckles and the drag link joint on the tie rod, but uses a tie rod end at the pitman arm. It's above the knuckle with a spacer on it so it doesn't rollover. However for mainly road usage I'd use a setup with all tie rod ends.

my steering is all heims for my DD, but most people do choose tre's.
i like to be extra flexy at the expense of longevity

Tie Rod End > Heims.

I like to use ball joints and weld a bolt on them with a slight angle so I get more flex. (DONT TRY THIS! ITS NOT A GOOD IDEA!)

My bad. I wrote the wrong word. Please accept my appologies. They work on the same principle.

Anyway. I was thinking that the TIE ROD END would run out of flex rather quickly with a lifted vehicle (5.5 inch). Seeing that the drag link isnt bent at all. Thats why I was thinking of going with the heims. How long do the heims usually last compared to the TIE ROD END?

My jeep is going to see alot of sand, gravel, rock roads. Occasional trail rides (like flexy stuff) and a bunch of highway.

I guess I'd like to see which heims you plan on using that have greater deflection than a quality tie rod end??

Personally, I would not install heim joints in the steering system for a Jeep that also gets driven on the road. I'd use a tie rod end, perhaps like Currie's heavy-duty TRE's they use in their steering kit. Heims wear more quickly than most other joints and once they get worn, they are noisy and at least in my opinion, not safe for use in the steering system once they become worn and noisy.

I saw on Extreme 4X that someone is making high misalignment heim joints. I don't remember who the manufacturer was though.

On my comanche I used the rustys over knuckle steering
its all hiems
now a friend of mine has the steering on his tj
my comanche was a DD the hiems have about 30,000 miles on it and they dont show any wear

heres the steering setup on the comanche right after I installed it

and the same steering setup on my friends jeep about 5 years later all the hiems are still tight
I did powder coat the arms green

i just want to throw out that despite running heims problem free on my daily driver, i would recomend you running TRE's because there is much more of a risk havimg heims wear down.
i also take good care of mine. if maintaince/keeping clean is an issue for you, tie rods are a much better choice.
