bandaid or other issue

Jeep has been running hot on hot days (95+ outside). This morning on a cool day (~80) it started to overheat. I pulled over, opened the hood and fluid was spewing everywhere. Released pressure from the Rad Cap and noticed I was low on fluid yet the overflow had some fluid in it. Nursed it the 5 miles back home. Once home I noticed that the lower rad hose was the culprit of the spewing. AutoZone has one for $30, Quadratec has one for $15, 4WheelParts has the same one as Quad for $20 (I got a store close by).

I guess my question(s) is this: What would cause the lower hose to spring a leak? By replacing the lower hose am I just putting a bandaid on a larger problem?

OF COURSE!!!
With today being Labor Day, Both Quad and 4WP are closed. After calling my local Autozone, they have one in stock for $19. On my way to pick it up now (in the wife's ride).

Hose off

Finally got the lower hose off. But the new hose seems to be quite a bit longer than the one I took off. Is this correct? Am I supposed to trim the excess length to fix the application?

UPDATE:

Got the new hose on. Was about to open the petcock to flush some fresh water through the system when... the petcock came off. in my hand. oh crap. Autozone carries them. 9 bucks. I just need to see if I can get the rest of it out of the hole to install the new one.

I would spray some PB or other break free juice on there before you go cranking on that little petcock.
