Best Brakes For 04 LJ

Im getting ready for some new brakes on my LJ with a 4.25" lift and 35x12.5x15 GoodYear Wrangler MTRK's. I have heard Black Magic brake pads are some of the best. But have no clue what the best rotor for these pads. What's the best combo for pads and rotors?

Centric rotors is what Blaine includes in the kit but an LJ on 35's is a bit much for the BM. He recommends the Vanco kit in that case.

I went with the AEV kit and upgraded pads to Black Magic. Awesome braking now.

I run Vanco brakes. powerbrakes hydroboosts vacuum boosters everything for your extreme braking needs



they're purely awesome. with 35's on an LJ you'll want more than just new pads and rotors.

For the price I would have went with the Vanco kit as well but theyre not compatible with RCV axels.

So the Vanco system is out of the question (too much money even for how tempting it is). I can lock up my Stock brakes (I think they are stock) now, though I really have to get on them. I am still looking at the Black Magic brakes with Centric Rotors. I know this isnt a perfect setup for 35" tires and steel rims (left that part out above), but will it be an improvement from stock?

You could look into WJ knuckles with their stock dual piston brake calipers, on the cheap!

When you can't afford the Vanco dual-piston caliper system that comes with Black Magic pads and Centric rotors, the next best thing is Black Magic pads and Centric rotors by themselves.

You can get a kit with both from Blaine in Riverside county not far from you at BlackMagicBrakes.com

Heck he'll even install them for you for a nominal fee at his shop.

That is what I was thinking. Except the install, I can do that myself.

I dont have them on my Jeep, but put them on my Lightning 10 yrs ago and have stayed with them. EBC brakes and rotors. will throw you thru the windshield

The braking performance of EBC's Yellow Stuff brake pads is only surpassed by Black Magic's pads.

I'd post it if I could find it, but there was a thread over on JF where the initial testers of the Black Magic pads were tasked with comparing them to EBC (and possibly other pads) to see whether or not they had any improvement in braking when switching to the new BMB pads.

I don't think there was a single person who didn't see a difference. They're definitely much better than the EBC stuff.

If like too add that slotted and drilled rotors are not a good thing for off road use. They get filled with mud and squeak for days afterwards.

I would love to have been able to do black magic or vanco brakes when replacing mine but as always I couldn't afford to spend that kind of cash. My stock rotors were in good shape so I went to O'reillys and picked up a set of performance friction pads for $64. Of course they aren't the best money can buy but compared to the cost of black magic or vanco you can't go wrong for the cost and performance of these pads. It's been well over a year and these things have held up great. Definately a massive improvement over stock.

No need to read the entire thing; you can skim over bits and skip around and still see how most everyone saw an improvement in braking. They're definitely great brakes.

If there is a group of folks arm wrestling in a bar, you don't challenge the losers to see if you are the best. We already knew the EBC yellows were the best because we tested them and used them in the Vanco kits.

When we were approached by the makers of the Black Magic stuff, we did the same testing, but per my usual testing style, I don't expect anyone to believe me, so we picked out testers that were already pleased with the yellows.

Offroad use aside, we've also done testing with slotted rotors which do work better at the upper end of braking events at the expense of equivalent performance to a smooth face rotors at the beginning of brake events.

Yes and no. You can regularly source the parts fairly cheaply and typically all of them need to be rebuilt or replaced.

If you do it correctly instead of half assing it together there is about 30-50 hours of labor involved.

I know your website says for an LJ that I would need the Vanco Brake Kit for my LJ with 35" Wrangler MTR Kevlar and steel wheels. But I just dont have that kind of money. Would I see a great improvement over stock brakes (That is what I have now)? I would love to do a kit like the Vanco, but after new tires and axles, it is going to be a while.

We know folks struggle with funds and that is precisely why we offer the stock replacement stuff.

You will see the best improvement the stock sized stuff is capable of but just be aware that it is not now nor will it ever be equivalent to the Vanco kits.

The only reason we put that disclaimer up is we had a few folks with very heavy rigs on 35's buy the pads and rotors and then get on the boards and complain that they aren't as good as their buddy's Vanco Brakes.

Emphasis on not as good with Vanco in very tiny letters.

Blaine, I'm putting in order in next month for a full kit for my TJ. I plan to replace my fluid and put on stainless lines as well. Any recommendations for those two components?

ok, I did go back and did a non-scientific review (went every five pages until I found the pages where there was feedback from the original group). As I read it, it seemed that the BM and the EBCs were on par with each other at light to moderate braking pedal pressure. It was at the top end (heavy braking) that the BMs seemed to outperform the EBCs. This is exactly when you need it, not so much the other times. Also, I would tend to get smooth or slotted rotors, but not cross drilled.
I havent had cross drilled since the first set I got with my Ford Lightning, and saw the cracking that occurs, plus the tendency for dirt and other foreign matter to get caked and stuck in the holes.
I think I will probably give them a try when the time arrives for a brake job. I have run EBCs for about 8-9 years in my truck with very good results, so having another reasonably priced alternative is a good thing.

I've not found too many issues with the various line offers out there. We use Crown which are made in Southern California, not the Crown that copies all the OEM parts and I don't know of any issues with them.

I use the Valvoline brake fluid in the blue label bottle. Readily available with high boiling points.

Flush the system before you do anything else.
