To me, the best bargain in winches are the non-Chinese made Warn M8000 and newer Warn VR8000... both of which are manufactured in Oregon. Smittybilt, Engo, and Quadratech winches are all manufactured in China.

X2 and with Warn, if you wait, they run specials every so often (ie: free wireless winch controller and $100 off)

Right, and for how long? A Smittybilt is no Warn.

Yep I'd rather buy a used Warn than have a brand new Smittybilt.

Send a message via AIM to Mortalis5509
Go on pirate 4x4 and look in the general for sale section and you can find used winches on there.

Engo is also a good winch.

this may be a stupid idea but someone at church has a mile marker 3000lb winch for $175. Good deal?? i mean all you would need to do is put a snatch block on it to double the pulling power and there ya go...but i think that it was originally for a four wheeler and in the case of winches less may not be better then more.

A 3K winch is way too small for a Jeep, even with a snatch block. Go for an 8K or larger capacity winch.

I have a Smittybuilt winch on my 98TJ (didn't know any better at the time) and it has been in a garage most of its life only to be outside every weekend or so. It looks like it has been on there for 5 years and it is only 2 years old. The Warn M8000 on my 04LJ has been on there for about a year now, outside 99% of its life, in rain, snow, sun, temperatures over 100*, and on the coast. It still looks like it just came out of the box, the quality is much better than the Smittybuilt. It doesn't whine or feel under powered. It pulled a full sized Chevy 3500 up a dune after he got stuck in a witch eye trying to rescue someone else. The only problem with Warn (has nothing to do with their winch) was the instructions. They were really lacking, but other than that I would trust my life with the Warn any day.

Your very right I do understand that warn is a better quality winch but some just cant afford a $1000 winch.

New Warn M8000 winches are commonly found on sale in the $500 range. Then there are always used Warns too. I'd rather buy an American made used Warn, Ramsey, or Superwinch X9 or S9000 than any Chinese winch like Smittybilt imports.

warn m8000 - Google Search

Your Jeep pulled a Chevy 1 ton up a dune? Am I correct when I read this?

No question you get what you pay for in a winch. Before I knew better I bought a Black Mountain winch for my YJ. The very first time I used it was on a tree that had fallen and was blocking the trail I was on. I turned the Jeep sideways across the trail and with the help of a healthy tree and a bark protector I began to winch the tree off of the trail. Probably moved it about 12' when the winch popped and the line went slack. Coiled it up by hand and headed back to the garage. Uncoiled all of the line to find the screw that held the line to the spool had snapped off. Fortunately there was another threaded bolt hole on the opposite side of the spool and I was back in business quickly. It was probably my fault in that I did not take the line all the way out and retighten it when I first got the winch. But the size of the screw holding that cable to the winch spool is incredibly tiny. Hard to believe a screw that small could be found anywhere on a 8000 lb winch, let alone being the fastener that holds the line on. Bought a VR8000 for my 97 build up and winched a couple of trees off the trail last summer no problem. I am now a Warn man. Is worth the piece of mind.

Listen to Jerry, he knows what he's talking about. BUY AMERICAN, it will last a long time and won't give you any problems. I bought a used Warn 9.5ti from a buddy for $700 (a little expensive for a used winch) but it's in great condition, and has already helped me out on the trail. When i started shopping for a winch i had wanted something cheap, i then learned on the forum about winches. You can never go wrong with american made. It's as simple as that. Your chinese made winch will probably give out after a couple dozen uses and you'll have to buy a new one..Warn, Superwinch, or Ramsy will last you a long time.

Thoughts on Ramsey winches? Made in America, correct? How about Superwinch?
