Best child restraint for TJ rear seat?

I have a 2001 TJ just wondering my options on child restraint for the rear seat. Both of my girls are in booster seats but just want them safe. Thought maybe 5 point harness of some kind

A high back belt positioning booster will provide sufficient protection when used properly with the 3 point belts in the rear. Recaro boosters are very good quality and provide proper belt fit given that they are adjusted properly as instructed by the owners manual.
All new boosters on the market are static tested for belt fit and are given a rating. I would suggest that you go to iihs.org and click on "Booster Ratings" . The "Best Bet" rating is given to seats that can be adjusted to provide proper shoulder and neck belt fitment in any vehicle configuration, they are not crash tested by IIHS.
I personally would recommend a booster that does have added head protection. There are many too choose from.

What are the features of the jeep that make the back seat safer then the front seat? With the short back side of a jeep I feel like the front seat is close to the middle of the vehicle. However i am assuming that in a side impact the rear end would be better then the the door.

That is an excellent question. It a known fact that the safest place for a child is in the middle of the rear seat. TJs don't offer that of course. I understand your concern, the lack of head restraints in the back seat offers zero whiplash protection. I don't know if high back booster seats are crash rated on seats without head restraints. This may be a case where your child would be better protected in the front seat with the passenger side airbag turned off. I'll consult with an experienced engineer tomorrow and let you know.

So I was told that the safest place is in fact the rear seat with a sturdy highback booster that offers good head protection.

As a former federally-certified child safety seat installer, I will confirm that this is true. What is the safest child seat? The one that you will install properly and use correctly every time.

In a recent post, I went in depth about how to properly install an infant seat into a Jeep. Most of that info applies to installing a seat for an older child as well. Check it out.
