Well my XJ is lifted 4.5" on long arms and has rear leaf springs so it's a bit different than my stock TJ with coils front and rear. But for the ride quality, the 5100's are smooth at all speeds and a tad bit on the soft side (perfect for my firm springs). The HD's are a slightly firm during the slow goings but are outstanding at 35+ mph. I barely can notice cracks or bumps in the road when cruising at the higher speeds.

I have zero complaints with either shock.

Would you say the 5100 is too soft on the highway? How is the firmness compared with stock?

Thats why I like the Rancho 9000's. Set them soft around town and firmer on highway

I love my Ranchos. I adjust them differently when offroad as opposed to on road. When driving on road I set them to 4-5 in front and 3-4 in rear. Offroad I dial them all the way up to 9 on all corners. Rougher ride but I come off of rocks much better without bottoming out as much.

No, they are great on the highway, just softer than the HD's IMO. I dunno how to compare it with stock cuz my stock shocks were shot. They would not extend when compressed and were leaking.

RC 2.2's

After waiting 3+ weeks I got my 5100's today. Installing them with +1"H&R springs tomorrow. Can't wait to see how they ride!

Which Rancho did you try? How were they?

What do you do when the front shock top mounting bolt won't turn - the end just spins in the vise grips...its been royally PB Blasted.

It's probably the original shock, don't have sawzall and can't get a rotary tool to it , thinking about drilling through the nut/post a couple times and tapping it off with a hammer

After reading these postings, got a question. Mine is stock now, if I go with bilstein 5100, does this mean if I get a 2" lift later that I could still use these shocks??

Just break it off. Pull as hard as you can. They should snap.

I used an impact on my nuts (ouch) and it took em off in seconds.

There is a special tool that holds the end of the shock shaft while you turn it. I've used a very small socket on it in the past and it held the shaft still while I used a closed-end racheting wrench on the nut.

Don't forget that your axles will shift when you lift it. The rear more than the front usually. This could cause issues with tire clearance/rubbing. You will also need to adjust toe then center your steering wheel.

You are correct....I installed a 2 inch BB and wasnt comfortable with the clearance so I picked up and OME track bracket for $21.00...still have to install it but I think its a purchase that should be done for anyone looking to do a small lift.

It's what I did with my first TJ but it seems nowadays that there's alot of issues with the OME bracket. I didn't have any problems with it in 4 years of heavy abuse though.

At 2" though 9 out of 10 times it barely moves. You perfectionists just have to get the stupid bracket lol.
