Best Swing-out Tire carrier

Just wanted some opinions of what brand of bumper/tire carrier you have had good luck with? I don't want the cheap rattle traps, but also don't necessarily want to spend over a grand either. Granite, i know you usually get what you pay for. I've noticed some good prices on the Rampage rear bumper tire carrier for about 560.00 and wondered if anyone has this one or has heard any pro's or con's on it?

Maybe not the answer you are looking for-My experience is with Rugged Ridge-not the cheapest not the fanciest. On the back of the Jeep almost 4years now. Still no rattle-but have to "adjust" the hinge on the swing out part a couple times a year. Also noticed need to clean of some surface rust and rattle can it this spring. For the less than $400 I paid including shipping- very satisfied.

Tough to find a good rear tire carrier. I have an older version of Mountain Offroad http://www.mountainoffroad.com/ rear tire carrier. Solid as a rock, no rattle, moves smoothly as it has some large bearings on the spindle. Had it on for almost 4 years now. Their new one opens with the tailgate, a feature I am very jealous of!

That said its about at a grand.

I have yet to see a bumper mounted spare tire carrier that I would mount on my TJ. The swing-out spare tire carrier that I have installed on both of my two jeeps was made by Offroad-Fabricators located in Arizona.

Their design puts the entire load onto the roll bar mount bases via heavy duty hidden mounts that bolt to the rollbar bases. Which also means that you can use any rear bumper you like. Or stay with the factory rear bumper.

After 10 years of use on my first jeep, carrying two 5 gallon jerry cans too, it never sagged, squeaked, or rattled.

It is available in two styles, one that carries two 5 gallon jerry cans, the other that does not. Both are set up to carry a Hi-lift jack.

I went with the Rock Hard and I've been pleased with it. Very solid, no rattles after 3 years and a bunch of trail runs. Had all the stuff I wanted, CB antenna mount, HiLift, Mount, 2" receiver with safety chain holes, D ring mounts, and offers a basket, Jerry can holeders, etc to add on if I end up doing a long trip in the future.

You won't be disappointed if you buy a Rockhard.
They aren't cheap, but they are sure worth the money. Excellent product, good and strong by a company that backs their products.


Mine is a Rockhard "clone" of sorts and I am very pleased with it.

I have both the front and rear rampage bumpers and like them alot. No rattles or rust and my 33" spare is nice and snug.

the best swing out bumper/carrier, IMHO, is the Hanson.

You'll get as many opinions as there are products out there.
What you need to do is get out there and look at them. Hands on and talk to folks that have them and see which features you want in one.

Is it sturdy?
Ease of operation?
Can you mount accessories to it? (gas cans, racks etc)
Warranty?
Customer service?

I think the most important thing for me is one handed operation to open it and I like that it has a keeper that holds it open. To close it from the locked open position does require two hands. One to release the keeper, the other to move the carrier.

just so you know, I don't have a Hanson. I can't afford it...that looks like the best design of a bumper mounted tire carrier, to me.

I had a bumper mounted tire carrier I made, it worked pretty well...but I sold it because I could never get the darn thing to not rattle against the tailgate...and I fabbed all sorts of stuff.

I second the vote for Hanson. Although pricey, their rear bumper/square tire carrier is solid, good-looking and has lots of features--including a locking "hold-open" and integrated mounts for a Hi-Lift + CB antenna. You can also add Hanson's cargo packages (also pricey) in a variety of different configurations which can pretty much double your cargo capacity if you go big enough.

The only drawback (aside from the price) is that the installation instructions are awful. From what I read on another thread, Hanson has even admitted as much. They are nothing you can't ultimately figure out but plan on spending most of the day on this project (the installation time estimates provided on a certain retailer's website are pure fantasy). Having someone with small hands available to assist wouldn't hurt, either.

I am on the market for one also,and its pretty daunting trying to pick one.So far Im leaning towards the Garvin Industries one,mainly because I have their Wilderness Expedition roof rack and I just sent it back to them after owning it for 5 years and it needed to refinishing due to some surface rust.For me a company that stands by their product is always worth the premium price. Just my $0.02.

I couldn't post pics of the OR-Fab carrier yesterday, here's a couple...



The two brackets on the sides are the hidden brackets that support the weight of the carrier from the rollbars. The center bracket is for the driver's side of the tailgate opening. It doesn't get any stronger than supporting everything from the rollbar mounts.

This shows it on a JK but it's the same on a TJ.



The last pic shows it on my previous TJ. That tan colored jerry can is for water. I had a red jerry can on the other side for gasoline.

As mentioned above, I've yet to see a bumper mounted carrier that was even close to being as strong. Bumper mounted carriers rely on one main mount plus one more for a total of two supports, the OR-Fab has two primary mounts plus one more for a total of three supports.

I second Jerry's recommendation for the OR-Fab carrier. I have the same one (the no gas can version) and am very happy with it. Solid and not rattles.

Hey Jerry !!! That or fab just mounts to the rear door brackets right? I don't have to have an aftermarket bumper to use it?

As mentioned several times above, it bolts to hidden brackets that are bolted to the rear rollbar bases. It doesn't use the bumper at all, and it doesn't bolt to the rear tailgate brackets or hinges. You don't even need a bumper to be installed for the OR-Fab carrier.

i have the warn bumper and tire carrier. i dunno how long it has been on for but it needs to be resurfaced. it does not rattle and im pleased with it

I thought about the OR-Fab, too--it looks great--but I had safety concerns about location of the gerry cans (being between the spare tire and tailgate). Are they up high enough to not get pinched in a collision from the rear? If not, that would seem to be huge danger.

I have a warn bumper and tire carrier combo. My complaints with it have been : the swing out tire carrier sags. The grease fitting for the tire carrier never would work. I had to remove it to grease it. My vertical tube of the tire carrier filled with water, froze in the winter, and cracked the tube. The top plastic cap wasn't seated correctly due to a wider tire pressing against it when bolted on the carrier. This should have been corrected by me to prevent the cracked tube, but I didn't notice the cap not being seated. A drain hole would also have helped.

I'm planning on replacing with the orfab soon.

First, if it makes you that nervous, the jerry cans are mounted high enough so that all but the biggest trucks would miss them. Not that the OR-Fab spare tire carrier is the only one to carry jerry cans back there.

If that still makes you nervous, OR-Fab also makes it in a shorter more compact version that does not carry jerry cans like I described above.

I have a Hanson rear bumper square tire carrier and yes I think its the best no rattles at all very solid I would have no problem pulling a trailer or boat. It comes with 4 stiffening brackets that are installed behind the tub and frame. Good to know because most rear Jeep bumper manufactures tell you not to pull a trailer with them. It doesn't swing very easy. Hanson says they designed it that way bc of the amount of weight that can be mounted on it. And I agree just my 37 is a lot of weight. I think ARB is the only one that actually has a tow rating. Its also one of my favorite bumper/tire carriers and is about $1100. That is a hard install. I like the Body Armor tire carriers. The latch that locks it down to the rear bumper is perfect and simple no rattles. Its also about $1000. Rock Hard and Or-fab are very cool and well made also. I had a Warn on my last Jeep that seemed to rattle by design but I like the price and powder coat. Smittybilt rattles as bad and has poor powder coat. Hope that helps you out take some pictures of the install and post them I'd love to see what you decide to go with.

Jerry, that OR-Fab tire carrier is pretty slick. I had never seen this before, but I like the fact that you can use any bumper. Seems pretty solid. Dang, I wish I had $500.

I've been looking for a good tire carrier as well. I was doing some searching on ebay and ran across these by Rob with TheDirtWorx. TheDirtworx items - Get great deals on Category 1, Category 2 items on eBay Stores!

His quote to me for a bumper with a Hi-Lift carrier and CB antenna tab was $380 plus $59 shipping. Awesome price. I've heard nothing but good comments about his work. The only potential hangup is he ships the product bare metal. Meaning you will have to apply the finish of your choice.
