How accessible is the tailgate area when the top is installed and is it weather sealed? Thanks folks. I know this top isn't too popular, so if you have it, your opinion is appreciated.
I have recently added a halftop as IG mentioned. And am really satisfied with it!! I had been asked about weight issues over the back end of the jeep as it is similar to a tonuea on a truck-I had no problems with a lot of snow (just started another thread about that.)
The question of how accessible is a matter of perspective or intended use. I was already accustomed to the size of area from using a duster and windjammer in warmer weather. (I didn't realize that the halftop would "fit" on my '04) I have all the room I need but can always "roll' the part over the back of the jeep up to the back of the front seats if I need to haul a large item. I can pack a lot of gear under that space and it isn't noticeable.
Trip to Lake MI last year had upper soft windows in a bag, 2 large suitcases, 2 back packs, tool box, recovery bag/gear, 3 blankets, small cooler, 2 beach chairs and a couple extra pillows.
Weather is not any issue in my application-it works great for me. It is also going to depend on the type of weather that it is subjected to. My OPINION is it will "seal" up as well as a "factory soft top"- if your soft top in good condition would leak in your weather, than the half top may as well.
As far as the "lost space cutting the jeep in half" with your backseat out (won't use it with halftop)-how much do you store or haul above the top of the tub? That is how much space you will loose or how much you will gain by removing your backseat. (you don't have to remove backseat) I would buy one again in a minute!!!
One last thing it was -1* last night coming home from South Bend about 75 miles-I was nice and toasty!!
Hope this helps?
