Bikini Top question

My 01 Wrangler is basically all stock, with a soft top, well....I want to get a bikini top for it. Do I have to change my header bar on the windshield? I've scoured the net looking and all I can find is pictures of old CJ's and YJ's

I'm gonna keep following this thread cuz I'm in the same boat as you...from what I've gathered in order to run a bikini top, we have to install a drill-in windshield header, but I'm unsure if it installs over top our current header or what.

It'd be nice to find a top that can be secured with our current stock header...but I haven't come across any yet.

I used a bestop no drill header on my '04. It clamps down where the soft top clamps down, then you attach the bikini top.

You mean over the stock header?

I really don;t want to remove the header and have to put it back on to put the top up, I'd like for the bikini top and soft top attaching to be interchangeable

The no drill header just bolts onto the holes where the soft top clamps into, it takes about 2 minutes to put off and on, you don't have to remove the old header.
also when you get you bikini set aside an hour to do it, your going to struggle to get it to fit. the fabric might seem too small to fit but it just needs to strech out for a week or so.

I was thinking the no-drill header only was for 2003+ Wranglers...might be wrong though. I thought I remembered reading that while shopping around. I've been given a free bikini top, but it doesn't come with the header...so I'm trying to figure out the cheapest/easiest to install header I'll need.

Try this link, they attach with out any header bar, (leave it on or take it off). the Spider Web can stay on with the soft top up or down it can even be left on with the hard top on. I take if off for the winter when I put my hard top on, it's fast and easy.

So basically I need to order a bikini top with a no drill header, unless I want to change them out each time I go from bikini to soft, and the no drill will go on top of the current header and work, right?

If you want a bikini why not just leave the windows out and go safari style. Or if you aren't as worried about rain, but mostly sun, then I second the SpiderWeb tops. They are great for shade.

Unless its gonna be clear and no rain I leave the doors on and just drop the top. I go safari style a lot too, but every now and then I want to drop the whole top and yank the doors

Thanks. now I know which one to get, since I don;t wanna go drilling and swapping bars all the time.

I already want to replace the header bar, but I want to keep it as original as I can, for two reasons, (1) its a little cheaper (2) I've never been one for doing unnecessary modifications unless I need to to make a vehicle run, and pass insp

Having had both types of headers on my recently stolen '97 TJ, the no-drill and drill-type header, it didn't take me long to determine that I MUCH preferred the ease, simplicity, and speed of installing the bikini into the drill-type header. It literally takes seconds to slip the bikini into the drill-type header from the side & then you're only left with attaching the header to the sides & rear. I never liked the drill-less clamp on header, it's not nearly as quick or as easy to install as it should be.

In fact, though my replacement '04 Rubicon is only supposed to work with a no-drill header due to the plastic covering the windshield frame, I will be removing that plastic so I can go with another drill-type header. The plastic just unsnaps so it's no big deal.

Having had both, I did not want to be forced into another no-drill header so I am happy that I have figured out that it's no big deal to make the drill-type header work. Plus the drill-type header can remain in place year-round, a very nice thing. No need to have to go find the clamp-on header to mount the bikini or safari top as I prefer.

I do not think this is correct, if I understand what you are saying.

TJ Headers:

The OE TJ top comes with a nice header that stays attached to the soft top. It detaches from the windshield, but is "permanently" attached to the fabric with 8-15 small screws.

So even if you have a soft top on your TJ, you still need a new header when you get a Bikini. You certainly need one if your other top is a hard top.

In order to sell Bikini Tops affordably, we sell a relatively inexpensive "drill-in header" that is very much like the header used in CJs and YJs. This is cost effective, but certainly less convenient. This header will need to be removed before reinstalling your hard top or full soft top.

Several years back we added "drill less headers" to the line up. These headers work with SOME but not all of our TJ Bikinis. These are easier to latch on, and remove, than the original "CJ" style. They are also a bit more expensive. It also needs to be removed when going back to the hard top, but is much easier to remove.

So now we have several different styles of Bikinis (short, full length, mesh, etc) AND two different styles of headers. None of which are interchangeable.

Yes this is confusing.

Jerry's point on the old style being easier to quickly put up the Bikini top is probably a good point. The fixed headers are simple, and therefore easier to use. For Jerry, I assume the difficulty of occasionally breaking out a screwdriver is not a big thing.

I got a bit confused reading the above messages, and I'm home drinking beer right now. If I got this wrong, please let me know, and if I didn't answer your question, shout out. Thanks.

PS: Bestop has a trademark on Bikini Tops. But other people make similar items, obviously. The above info should be more-or-less correct for all Bikini style tops that use a header. As someone above points out there are now "tarp" style tops that hang below the windshield. These do not use a header. They also do not attach to the windshield, which is a good and bad thing, depending on what you want.

I have a no drill header for my 2000. It's awesome and easy/quick to install. Two bolts.

Mine does bolt right on over where the factory soft top would clamp if it was up.. but instead of those clamps the channel bolts into the holes...

YES! This is exactly true. I was picturing some weird thing of two headers bolted together though, when I read that first post. I thought I was reading something wrong.

JC Whitney was the best price I found.. a lot of sites (4wd.com and Quadratec) are having big Memorial Day sales (you know to honor the fallen through retail discounts ) .. anyways.. so you might get free shipping, or a discount the next week or so.

I take my soft top completely off and put it in the garage. I attach my "no drill" header and leave it attached for up to months at a time. I can attach my safari top to it or take it off and store it under my duster cover. I leave it that way for most of the summer. When I get tired of that set up I remove the "no drill" header and attach my soft top and go from there. You don't have to remove the "no drill" header to take the safari/bikini top off, only to put your soft/hard top on.

Just wanted to thank you for this link. I had been looking for a top and this one is not only the closest thing to what I wanted, but the seemingly easiest to install and best priced IMO.
