bilstein shock install

I can't install the front shocks. When I try to tighten the top lock nut the piston spins. There is no place to hold back on it. Any tricks I need to know of? I'm about to throw these out the garage right now.

Impact is what you need. Hit it with an impact wrench and it will cinch right up.

Start the nut there should be a flat spot on the very top of the piston. Use a pair of vise grips on the flat spot wrench on the nut. Or if there is room you can use needle vise grips on the piston right under where the washer and bushing sit

Got all the shocks installed. Took it for a long ride, drove up and down a bumpy dirt road and all I can say us why didn't I put these shocks in years ago? What a great ride. By far the best upgrade I have done to the Jeep. I highly recommended the Bilstein HD shocks to anyone looking for quality and comfort.

I got your answer! On the top of the piston shaft, there's a hex inside. Take your hex tool, insert/hold and while tighening your top nut. BINGO

Bilstein shocks have a hex hole in the end of the shock shaft. You insert an Allen wrench into the hole to prevent the shock shaft from spinning while you tighten the nut with a wrench.

ah man i was hoping to be the hero on this one. I had the same question while installing my own. If you open your hood (or atleast on my 97) there is a circle hole in the fender well where you can stick your allen or hex head through to hold while someone else tightens down the nut. This hole for the allen or hex did not exist on my rancho's i would always struggle with them

For some reason that guy is pretty cool. Did you hear what happened to him a while back. He was caught with a hooker that bit his tongue and he punched her a few times. He was beat up pretty bad, not sure about the hooker.

I thought the infomercials were bad to watch. Poor hooker, she had to listen to his sales pitch as pillow talk. Guess she just couldn't take it.

Don't move honey, I'll go get you a shamwow.

Remember when he said that shamwow cleans up anything? It was just product research.

"Stop having a boring tuna, stop having a boring life"

And my favorite line...
"Your gonna love my nuts"

How that passed through the FCCs fingers I'll never know.

Bringing back an old thread but here goes..

For those that have installed these on a 2012 or newer, are you cutting the plastic stock part near the front shock mount to have better access? Also, did you use the bushings supplied with the new Bilsteins or just re-use the stock ones?

My bilstein install is imminent. Any answer to the questions you posed? I'm reading a lot of conclicting reports on the correct orientation of the supplied "washers" also...

Nice! Next mod on my jeep will be Bilsteins! I inherited my Jeep with a mystery lift kit.I don't know who makes it or what height it is. It does however accommodate 33's perfectly, has factory control arms all the way around. It had a TC drop but I recently did the 1.25" BL and MML. My guess is 3" suspension lift. The current shocks in the rear are silver with black boots and the front are white with red boots. It's no fun hitting ANY bump.
Anyone have an idea which shocks I order?

Thank you!!
