Bitter Sweet X-Mas

Well first off...Merry Christmas to everyone! So my wife got me what I have been wanting and that is my GoPro Hero3 White. But...today my damned Jeep starting squealing between 5MPH and 30MPH. Opened the door and hung my head down and its the front drive shaft. Anyone know what is going on with it?

What he said. Remove front drive shaft or have it towed with the front up. Fix it now before it seizes and you have bigger problems.

it costs about $125-150 to replace all joints in the front driveshaft yourself

If you continue to drive it, you will be back on here wanting to know why your transfer case got blown into two separate pieces. Pull the shaft now before you really make a mess.

Ya, I already had to replace to T-Case because that happened to my brother when he owned it, so today I am removing the shaft. Is it easy to replace the U-Joints?

The idea is easy, but depending on how hard the ujoints are stuck it can be a bear. It took me 4 hours to get the two broken free on my rear drive shaft and about 30 minutes to get the new ones in. Guess it would depend on what kind of press or tools your using.

Shafts dont squeal.
Joints do.
U-Joints are almost brainless-easy to replace.

Be sure to splurge the extra $2 per joint and get replacement joint WITH SERVICEABLE GREASE PORTS.

Oh...and then service them by adding greas once a year.

Also, when you take them out of the package...go ahead and give into temptation to carefully pull one of the caps off to see whats insided....just a bunch of grease and pins...then even more carefully slide that cap back on, making sure you dont let any of the pins fall out of alignment.

Im not talking about "Mission Impossible disarming a nuclear warhead on a moving train" kinda careful...but more like first-date kinda careful.

If you arent the curious/nosey sort...leave the caps alone.

Again, cheap and easy and makes ya feel like ya done something. Id go ahead and replace the joints at both ends of the shaft...theyve got the same number of miles on 'em.

Lastly, if ya get joints with grease ports...DO NOT pump em up with grease until after you have them installed and buckled up....it'll make you life a bit easier.

Well, this could not have happened at a worse time. My garage is packed up minus basic tools because I am buying a house and getting ready to move. I'll probably just suck it up and buy the good U-Joints and take it to a machine shop to have them installed. I mean it can't be that expensive...right? Just another stress that I don't need at the moment

I bet you could probably do it with borrowed tools.

Shoulndt be more than about a 30 minute job.

I'd be shocked if the joits are more than $30 ea. Should be closer to $20. But its been a while since I bought one (that why I get "servicable" and good grease)
