blown gasket

well i think my head gasket is blown on my 1998 4 cylinder with 123000 miles. i believe this because there seems to be oil leaking from around there. would this affect the water coolant because its really low now. ill post pictures later. thanks in advance.

A blown head gasket would show more water/steam escaping than anything else as oil doesn't usually pass through the outer passages of an engine. A leaking valve cover gasket would show oil everywhere.

Another thing to check for a blown gasket is water in the oil. Check to see if the oil is a lighter color than it normally is.

Either way, for someone with average skills and only a few hand tools, replacing a head gasket and valve cover gasket is pretty simple on a 4 banger.

If you need any repair info (i.e. torque specs and such) let me know, I have a fair amount of electronic repair data available.

all the information would be appreciated. to replace a blown head gasket, what will be needed? is it a expensive fix if i do it my self? thanks for the help

I don't mean to test your knowledge, but are you sure you don't mean valve cover gasket? The reason I ask is because valve cover oil leaks are fairly common (an easy fix) and sometime people accidently refer to them as a head gasket.

Keep the rockers and pushrods in a box like this, then you will place them back where they came from.

If you have to ask then it means you are not ready for it. The top half of the engine has to come out and then you don't know what else could have gone wrong. Has it overheated at all?

You might be right. I'm not really sure and what your saying might be the problem. Can you give me more info on the valve cover oil leak. Thanks

I just went through this myself. Luckily, I had a local Jeep guy who helped me by installing a 2.5 I found elsewhere because my old motor was probably too far gone to fix.

That said, to properly do the head gasket (if it is an HG), you'll need to pull at least the head and top of the motor off but are probably better off pulling the whole motor so you can have both sides of the head inspected and re-finished before doing the gasket. Else, your fix won't last long.

So after looking it over and having a friend look at it. It seems to be the valve cover gasket. Thank you all for the info. Just got look up how to fix this. I heard its not that hard

Took me about 30 mins the first time. Didn't quite get it to seal, so pulled it off again in about 10-15 mins.

The second time around I pulled the stock rubber gasket off in one piece (looked fine). Degreased and cleaned the valve cover. Applied a bead of high temp Orange RTV sealant, on cover. Then put the oem rubber gasket back on the sealant and let it dry over night.

In the morning I bolted the valve cover back in place and no more oil leaks.
