bought a bumper now i want more lights

I just bought this bumper.
Rokmen - Mercenary Front Bumper, Wrangler TJ and LJ
now i want two more lights to put on the hoop. I've seen halla 500's and wasn't impressed. I want a bright light with a good pattern but not to much money. What would you guys suggest.

There's a few different Hella 500's, so don't count them all out if you only saw one particular set. I love the ones I have, they're fog lights and do an excellent job of putting light out to the sides, but you'll want something different if you're trying to put light a long distance down the road/trail, etc.

there are only two types of 500's out. its either a fog light or a driving light. i say to go with a set of KC lights, they are a fairly reasonable price.

There are the 500 Fogs, the 500 Driving, the 500 FF Fogs, and the 500 FF Driving.

Are you looking for aux lights for the trail or for the road? I assume the trail based on their mounting location?

You dont want fog's you want driving lights.

I have both hella 500 driving lights and IPF 968 driving lights on my jeep. The hella's are fine but they bring to mind the saying "you get what you pay for". They're nothing fancy but they'll get the job done.

The IPF's on the other hand are excellent. Great wiring harness, great build quality, and they're throw a great beam of light. They include a set of 100 watt bulbs in with them if you want to replace the 55's that are already installed in them. The 100 watt bulbs are BRIGHT.

It all deppends on your budget though. The 500's are about 60 while the IPF's are about 140. Again you get what you pay for...

I have 4 KC 100W Daylighters on the front of my Jeep. I actually don't use them all that often, but the one time I needed them, I was very happy with the amount and pattern of light they put out.

if you want something really bright, you should go for the IPFs. they are more expensive than some others, but it looks sharp and it's an extremely solid build. i have the 900xs and i'm overwhelmed with the massive amount of extra light they supply (i have it hooked up to my highbeam switch, which is great for street driving!).

For the money, Daylighters are far and bright. I couldn't spend $200+ on a set of lights, but that's just me.

Lightbulb

Nice look'n bumper. Congrats!

I bought 2 sets of KC Hilites Daylighters. Both are 130w. One set are Driving Lights (mounted in the front, on the light bar) and the other set are Long Range. (mounted on the windshield brackets) Both are very bright, and nice to have. Both sets work great and serve a specific purpose, so it really depends on what you're planning on using them for. Here are the differences:

The Driving Lights give a wider range of light and work very well. Although they do not have quite the distance as the Long Range, I personally think they are bit more practical because they cover a wider area in front. (They WILL extend past your high beams) If you're mounting them close together (as I did)(and if you don't have the stock driving lamps) you'll probably want to aim them out further than I did to cover a wider area. Mine are aimed straight forward because my stock driving lamps cover the sides for me.

The Long Range Lights will definately give you the distance if that's what you're looking for. These lights have a very intense focused beam. They are NOT for side to side coverage, but if you want a bright "dead ahead" focused beam, these are great.

All KC lights are backed with a 23 year warranty, so that's pretty nice. I picked mine up at Amazon about 4 months ago for $100 per set. Normally these particular lights run about $140-$175, depending on where you find them.

*Also: I've heard that these bulbs can be changed out with Hella's 100w Xenon Blue or White Bulbs. I haven't done it yet myself, but plan to. If you're planning on doing this, you might want to check and see if 130w to 100w is okay or not. If not, KC Hilites makes the both the Driving and Long Range lights in 100w as well.

--One last thing: KC Daylighter Lenses are interchangable. So you can actually buy one set of lights, (Fog, Driving, or Long Range) and just buy the other lenses to change their purpose to fit your needs.

Not to hijack your thread or anything...but I have a question myself that pertains to these aftermarket lights:

I'm always a bit worried that someone will eventually come by and steal my KC's from my rig. The only safety feature that I've found is a proprietary key nut that KC makes. It's similar to the key nuts for wheels. But they want $30-$40 for a set of those! That's means that I'd have to pay up to $120 just to secure my lights. (I have a set on the back end as well) I think that's BULLSH*T!

Have any of you guys found a better and cheaper way to secure your lights for theft? (My Geman Shepard does a great job, but it's not like he lives in there)

Another vote for KC's.

My Daylighters ( model 238) are great and really work well. I use them just about every night on the way home from work to keep an eye out for elk. They definitely shoot out farther than the high beams and are a tad wider. I think I got my set for just over a hundy.

go to home depot and get some high grade locking nuts and take an impact gun to them. without an impact gun it would take far too long for someone to steel, all they look for is something quick and easy to take. and if you really want to keep them from getting stolen just weld those suckers on.

sounds like 130w kc's are the way to go. I have stock driving lights that im going to move to the new bumper so i don't know if i want driving lights or long range. I'm leaning towards long range cause they will only be on on the road when i come home late and nobody is on the road. The rest of the time they would be used offroad. hmm

Long range/driving lights are the same thing really. I think driving lights have a slightly wider beam but shorter throw.

Unfortunately, I don't have an impact gun or compressor.
But wait, you just gave me a great idea..... I should go get some JB Weld and plaster that all over them...that'll do the trick!.....

Yep, you're right. The only difference between a 130w Long Range Daylighter and a 130w Driving Light is the spread and the distance. And all that determines that is the actual lens itself. The Long Range Light has a clear lens, while the Driving Light has lines running through the lens. The Fog Light has some sort of distinctive lens as well, but since I don't own a set, I couldn't tell you exactly what it is. It's the same principle though.

I love my Hella 500's. They are bright for every night driving but not too bright. They do throw a nice long beam of light. I have the driving lights. I still get the occassional high beam flash from oncoming motorists but hey, its a fricken lifted Jeep so some lower riding vehicles are gonna get the lights in the eyes.....
