Bought a Jeep today!!

Hi everyone! I'm not new to the offroading scene (had a Ford Ranger), but I am new to the crazed Jeep scene. I've always wanted one, now I got one!

Bought a 97 TJ for $1800 bucks! Only a few things though, which is why it was soo cheap...

front left fender is mangled.
dent on rear right fender, above the bumper.
somethings wrong with the front diff.

As soon as I bought it, I lifted it, took all the tires off, and had the wife put it in gear. When I put it in 4X the light doesn't show. And 3 of the wheels rotate, but the front right wheel doesn't. It moves, but intermittently. So here I am, looking through my Haynes book, and searching these forums. Any suggestions are welcome!

Keep Jeepin...
Tony

First of all, welcome to the forum. Glad you found us. There are a lot of very helpful, knowledgeable, people on this site. I also am not clear to your problem. As most wranglers are open in the differentials, you really only have one wheel in the front, and one wheel in the rear that will spin at any given time. The exceptions to this are limited slip in the rear, or selectable lockers that are found on Rubicons. Rubicons are the only Jeeps, from factory, that are truely all four wheel drive. The majority of wranglers are open, meaning that the wheel with the least resitance will spin, on both axles. Does this help you any, or am I making you more confused?

I have to add one more thing. I am very envious of you for buying one so cheap. That is awesome. You can do any modification you want to on that Jeep, and you will be way ahead of the rest of us, price wise. I paid more than that for a 89 YJ with no drive train. No engine, tranny, t-case, or drive shafts. All it came with was heavier axles, and the tub. Hell, the seats weren't even mounted.

As far as your minor body damage, you can hide all of that very easily with flat tube fendors on the front, and rock corners on the rear. You have bought a gem.

Welcome to WF! Sounds like you got a sweet new friend. Congratulations!

You'll be able to get that Jeepie in shape. Mine YJ was rolled, and now you would never know it. Believe me, it was trashed, There are so many resources available, you won't have any trouble. I don't think you should hide the damage behind some corners, myself. It can be fixed.

Good luck!

Hell man congratulations on the purchase, that's a helluva deal. Mine almost looks like that but i'm the one whose done it.

Could be that because there was no torque on the wheels at all that the fronts were thoroughly engaged.

Best bet would be to pop the cover ont he diff and see if there's anything obvious that's wrong with it. Have you tried it in any kind of an off road situation with your 4wd yet?

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!

As far as the front diff goes, I now realize the full concept of an open diff. Its just that when I had it on the jacks, I figured I'd see all four spin at equal speed. I'm not sure if my front diff is limited slip, but the front right tire sure wasn't movin'. At least, not in a continuous rotation. Like a sputter, sort of.

I'll take it out in two weeks in some mud, see how it does.

Thanks again!

with stock street tires my 98 sport been thru lots of mud.......impressive but add 2" budget boost and 31" mud tires and its a diffrent beast

welcome to the addiction my friend, sounds like your front diff is normal, maybe a brake is dragging on one side barely holding that tire back

My first upgrade was EBC front brakes and rotors then a tune up
a good running Jeep beats Good Tires anyday
